Gedson Fernandes joined Spurs from Benfica in January 2020 in what is an initial loan move which is can become a permanent deal in 18 months for a fee of £56 million. Fernandes is a combative midfielder who can break play up well due to his physical stature but also has an eye for a forward pass – two qualities that a top midfielder would possess.
Gedson was born in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1999 and moved to Portugal in 2008 where he started his career at Portuguese side SC Frielas. After impressing there, he was quickly snapped up by Portuguese giants Benfica just a year later and further developed as a youth player before joining Benfica B in 2017.
It didn’t take long for Gedson to break into the Benfica first team as he made his first team debut in 2018 – just a year after his Benfica B debut. In two years, Gedson Fernandes made 29 apperances for Benfica but a fall out with the Benfica manager at the time halted the amount of game time the midfielder got.
He’s capped at various age levels by Portugal including the senior team.
