Sergio Reguilon – Player Profile
Sergio Reguilon, standing at 5ft 10in, is left back currently on loan at Spanish Giants Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur. He joined Spurs on Saturday 19th September 2020 for a reported fee in the region of £26.2m (€30m).
The Spaniard began his career with Real Madrid, joining their youth set-up at the age of just 8 in 2005. After impressing in the youth teams, he made his first senior appearances playing for Real Madrid Castilla (The reserve, or B team) in the 2015/16 season. He made 18 appearances for the team who finished in 4th with 50 points and in the promotion play-offs.
At the half way point of the 2015/16 season, Reguilon was loaned out to Spanish third tier side Unión Deportiva Logroñés. Reguilon made a total of 9 appearances in all competitions for the club in all competitions, helping them to achieve a 4th place finish, only to miss out on promotion.
They reached the Round of 32 in the Copa Del Rey (Spanish League Cup) that season as well, where they lost to La Liga outfit Sevilla, who went on to be runners up to FC Barcelona following a 2-0 win for the Blaugrana in the final at the Estadio Vicente Calderón (Home of Atletico Madrid).
Reguilon returned to Logroñés for the following campaign (2016/17). He played 30 times in all competitions this time around, scoring 7 goals whilst providing an assist for his teammates – this including a four goal haul against Bilbao Athletic in a 5-3 home win (Athletic Bilbao’s reserve team). It was a 6th place finish in the league for Reguilon and his Logroñés teammates.
For the following season, (2017/18), Sergio Reguilon made 30 appearances for Real Madrid Castilla in the third division. He scored 2 goals whilst also providing 4 assist for his teammates. Reguilon and Castilla finished in 8th place and missed out on promotion to the Segunda División (Spanish Second Tier).
The defender finally got his full Real Madrid senior team debut in the subsequent season (2018/19) on 2nd October 2018 in a Champions League match against Russian side CSKA Moscow. Unfortunately for Reguilon and his Madrid teammates, they lost 1-0 in the Russian capital. He then made his full La Liga (Spanish Top Flight) against Real Valladolid in what was a comfortable 2-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Sergio Reguilon made 22 appearances in all competitions that season, including 4 in the Champions League. It was a 3rd place finish with 68 points for Los Blancos that season, as well as reaching the Round of 16, where they lost to Dutch Giants Ajax over two legs. They were beaten in the semi final of the Copa Del Rey where they lost to their El Clasico rivals, FC Barcelona.
The 2019/20 season saw Reguilon make a loan move to fellow La Liga club Sevilla, for whom he made 38 appearances, scoring 3 goals with 5 assists. The club finished in 4th, whilst they also won the Europa League.
He then signed for Tottenham Hotspur before the start of the 2020/21 season. Reguilon made 34 appearances in all competitions with the club finishing 7th in the Premier League. The following season was more successful with the Lilywhites finishing in 4th place, qualifying for the Champions League.
The Spaniard then made the move to Atletico Madrid on loan for the duration of the 2022/23 season.
