Spurs vs. Manchester United: Memorable Matches

Ahead of this week’s Carabao Cup Quarter Final tie, here we will look back at some of the most memorable matches between Spurs and Manchester United over the years.

Spurs and Manchester United, led by Head Coaches Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim respectively, are two of English Football’s biggest clubs, and the two Premier League heavyweights will be going head to head in the Quarter Final of the Carabao Cup. The tie will be taking place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London in what is set to be a 20:00 Kick-Off on Thursday 19th December 2024.

Over the years, Spurs are most certainly no strangers to winning this competition over the years, having lifted the trophy on no less than 4 occasions throughout their illustrious history. The club first won it all the way back in the 1970/71 season, when they were 2 – 0 winners against their Second City counterparts Aston Villa at the Old Wembley Stadium, thanks to two goals from Martin Chivers late on in the second half (78’, 82’).

The other three wins followed in 1972/73 (1 – 0 vs. Norwich City), 1998/99 (1 – 0 vs. Leicester City), and most recently in the 2007/08 season, when goals from Dimitar Berbatov (70’ – Penalty) and Jonathan Woodgate (94’) both sealed a 2 – 1 victory against their fierce London rivals Chelsea at Wembley.

As for Manchester United, they have also enjoyed a great amount of success throughout their history. The Red Devils have won it on a total of 6 occasions, first doing so back in the 1991/92 season, when they were able to beat Nottingham Forest 1 – 0 thanks to a winning goal from Brian McClair early on in the first half. It was a game that saw two legendary managers go head to head – Sir Alex Ferguson for United, and Brian Clough for Forest at Old Wembley.

The other five League Cup wins for the Red Devils came in 2005/06 (4 – 0 vs. Wigan), 2008/09 (0 – 0, 4 – 1 on penalties vs. Spurs), 2009/10 (2 – 1 vs. Aston Villa), 2016/17 (3 – 2 vs. Southampton), and most recently in the 2022/23 season, when goals from Casemiro (33’), and Marcus Rashford (39’) sealed a comfortable 2 – 0 victory under that famous arch at Wembley.

The most recent competitive meeting between these two clubs saw them both meet in the Premier League at Old Trafford on 29th September 2024, which was at the start of the current and ongoing 2024/25 top flight season. It was to end in an incredible, ruthless, and thoroughly deserved 3 – 0 victory for Tottenham at the Theatre Of Dreams thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson (3’), Dejan Kulusevski (47’), and Dominic Solanke (78’).

Now, ahead of their latest competitive meeting in the 2024/25 Carabao Cup Quarter Final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the evening of Thursday 19th December 2024 in a 20:00 Kick Off, we will look back at some of the most memorable matches to have been played between them.

Tottenham 4 – 1 Manchester United (1995/96 – White Hart Lane):

We start by going all the way back to the 1995/96 Premier League season, where Gerry Francis’ Spurs took on a Manchester United side led by their Manager at the time, Sir Alex Ferguson, at White Hart Lane in North London.

In the end, it was Francis and his team who came away with the win, beating the Red Devils 4 – 1 thanks to some goals from Teddy Sheringham (35’), Sol Campbell (45’), and Chris Armstrong (48’, 65’). It was Andrew Cole who scored the sole goal for the visiting United side that day (36’).

Manchester United 2 – 3 Tottenham (2012/13 – Old Trafford):

For the next memorable game between United and Tottenham, we now have to fast forward all the way to the 2012/13 season, when the two met at Old Trafford in the Premier League. This was a real rollercoaster of a game that saw Andre Villas-Boas’ Spurs come out on top with a 3 – 2 win overall.

An own goal from United’s central defender Jonny Evans in the opening moments of the match saw Spurs take the lead (2’). This is an advantage that was doubled when Gareth Bale found the back of the United net to put his side 2 – 0 up against their hosts (32’).

Nani then pulled one back very early on in the second half (51’), before Clint Dempsey extended Tottenham’s lead back to two goals just a minute later (52’). Then, a third goal in as many minutes was scored by Shinji Kagawa to reduce Tottenham’s lead to just one goal (53’).

Manchester United 1 – 6 Tottenham (2020/21 – Old Trafford)

A truly extraordinary game between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United and a Jose Mourinho led Spurs side at Old Trafford back in the 2020/21 Premier League season. It was an emphatic 6 – 1 victory away from home for the visitors on that day.

A Bruno Fernandes goal from the penalty spot in the opening couple of minutes of the game (2’) was followed by a ruthless display from Spurs, with Tanguy Ndombele (4’), Son Heung-Min (7’, 37’), Harry Kane (30’, 79’ – Penalty), and Serge Aurier (51’).

Tottenham 3 – 0 Manchester United (2015/16 – White Hart Lane)

Finally, we move on to the emphatic and deserved 3 – 0 victory for Tottenham against United at this Premier League fixture at White Hart Lane in the 2015/16 season, when the Lilywhites were firmly in the title race that season alongside Leicester City.

This was a statement 3 – 0 win for Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs team, with Dele Alli (70’), Toby Alderweireld (74’), and Erik Lamela (76’) all scoring the three goals for the North London Club that day (76’).

All eyes will be on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for this crucial Carabao Cup Quarter Final tie in North London between two of English Football’s biggest and most successful clubs. Ange Postecoglou will be looking to lead his Spurs side to victory in North London and take his team closer to some silverware by the end of the 2024/25 season. Kick off will be at 20:00 on Thursday 19th December 2024.
