Transfers: Wilson Odobert signs for Spurs
The French forward has signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Championship Club Burnley.
Spurs have been one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League in terms of transfers so far this summer, and on Friday afternoon they confirmed the signing of another player. 19 year old French forward Wilson Odobert has agreed a move to the North London Club from Championship club Burnley.
Odobert has agreed to sign an initial 5 year contract, which is set to expire in 2029. The fee, according to acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano stands at an initial £25 million, with add-ons worth a potential £5 million.
The Frenchman is the Lilywhites’ 6th signing of the 2024 Summer Transfer Window so far, and he follows in the footsteps of Yang Min-hyeok, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Timo Werner and Dominic Solanke in joining the Lilywhites for the 2024/25 season so far.
Wilson Odobert plays primarily as a left winger in his career so far, but he has also been utilised as a right winger, an attacking midfielder, a centre forward, and a left midfielder. Whenever he does play for Spurs, he will be on the left hand side of the Lilywhites’ forward line.
Last season (2023/24), Odobert made 29 appearances in the Premier League for Burnley, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists for the Clarets in a season where he was unable to prevent his side from getting relegated back down to the EFL Championship with a 19th place finish with 24 points overall.
Rewinding to the start of his career, it all began in 2010 as a youth player for USF Trilport in France, before moving on to French heavyweights in the form of Paris Saint Germain after almost a decade at the club in 2017 at the age of 13.
Fast forward to the 2021/22 season, Wilson played his football for the Parisian team’s Under 19 side, playing in the National Under 19 Group A, the UEFA Youth League, and in the Coupe Gambardella (Youth Football Cup Competition).
In the league, he scored 16 goals with 4 assists, whilst in the UEFA Youth League he found the back of the net on 3 occasions in his 6 appearances in that competition, where they were knocked out in the Quarter Finals by Austrian outfit RB Salzburg after losing 3 – 1.
Then, on 15th July 2022, Wilson Odobert agreed to sign on professional terms with fellow Ligue 1 club Troyes, signing an initial 3 year contract that would have expired in 2025. In his single season with the club, 2022/23, he made a total of 32 appearances in the French top flight, scoring a total of 4 goals whilst getting 2 assists to boot. Unfortunately, Troyes did get relegated in 19th place after earning 24 points from 38 matches.
Burnley, then of the Premier League, came calling, and he signed for them on 12th August 2023, making his debut in a 4 – 1 defeat to Chelsea. He did however find the back of the net to become the club’s youngest ever Premier League goal scorer. He went on to score the aforementioned 3 goals whilst getting 3 assists to boot for the Clarets last term.
He now joins Spurs as they look to end the 2024/25 season having secured a return to the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League. This should also be an exciting signing for Spurs, with Wilson Odobert having shown quality in his career, and as a player with plenty of potential for the future.
Spurs’ first home game of the 2024/25 Premier League season will see them go up against Steve Cooper’s newly promoted Leicester City side at the King Power Stadium on Monday 19th August in a 20:00 kick-off.
They then face Sean Dyche and his Everton side in their first home game of the new campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 24th August 2024, in what is set to be a 15:00 kick-off in North London.
