Spurs v Liverpool Previous Fixture
Liverpool 4 – 2 Spurs (Sunday 5th May 2024)
Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs last met with Liverpool on Sunday, 5th May 2024, at Anfield in the Premier League. With Tottenham Hotspur still in the race for UEFA Champions League Qualification, the North London outfit knew that a victory would see them take a step closer to realising this ambition.
Ahead of this match, Tottenham sat in 5th place with 60 points to their name. If they were able to clinch the vital win that they were looking for on Merseyside, they would move to within just 4 points of Aston Villa, who occupied the fourth and final Champions League spot.
In their most recent Premier League game before taking on Liverpool, Spurs had been defeated 2 – 0 by their West London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Liverpool sat in third place with 75 points. The title contenders were only 4 points adrift of Manchester City in second and 5 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal ahead of kick-off against Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds knew that with a win, they could come within just a point of reigning Champions Manchester City if results elsewhere went their way.
Ultimately, it was a 4 – 2 defeat for Spurs at Anfield. Tottenham had the first significant opportunity to open the scoring in the opening five minutes of the contest, only for Yves Bissouma to narrowly miss the target following a set piece from just outside of the penalty area (3’).
However, just before twenty minutes had elapsed in the match, Liverpool took the lead in this crucial game for both clubs. Mohamed Salah found the back of Guglielmo Vicario’s net with an effort from within the penalty area, finding the bottom right corner (16’).
It was not until the very end of the first half that the Reds would add to the scoreline, and they did make it 2 – 0, doubling their advantage thanks to left full-back Andy Robertson, whose fierce shot found the bottom left corner of the Spurs net (45’).
The half-time whistle sounded soon after, and it meant that the hosts, Liverpool, had a two-goal lead going into the break and the start of the second half.
It did not take long for Liverpool to add a third goal in the second half, with Dutch international forward Cody Gakpo finding the back of the net via the bottom left corner following a cross that was played into him by Harvey Elliott. This goal came just five minutes after the half-time break (50’).
It was 4 – 0 with just over half an hour of the game remaining when Elliott scored himself, finding the top left corner after receiving a great pass into his feet from Salah (59’).
Then, with less than twenty minutes to go in the game, Spurs began to mount a comeback, with Richarlison pulling a goal back with a superb close-range finish to make it 4 – 1 (72’). The deficit was then halved just 5 minutes later when Son Heung-Min found the bottom left corner of the net after Richarlison turned from goal scorer to provider (77’).
Unfortunately for Spurs, they could not complete the comeback, and by the time the full-time whistle blew at the end of the second half, they had suffered a 4 – 2 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.
Spurs had the most possession, 56%, compared with Liverpool’s total of 44%. However, the hosts did have more shots on target, 13, compared with Tottenham Hotspur’s total of 6.
