As the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was quite outdated, the club looked for different ways to modernise the stadium and improve the location for the players and the fans. However, they were unsure whether they should make a whole new stadium or refurbish an existing one, and they went ahead with renovating an existing one.
During the 2018/19 season, the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was opened and built with the ultimate matchday experience, including world-class facilities, state of the art design, and excellent acoustics. Spurs v Liverpool Previous Fixture
Liverpool 4 – 3 Spurs (30th April 2023)
Spurs’ latest match against Liverpool was back in April 2023 at Anfield in what was an extraordinary match.
Ahead of the game, Tottenham sat in 5th place with 54 points to their name. 6 points separated the Lilywhites from a top-four spot, and they were ahead of Aston Villa in 6th place on goal difference. They were also 1 point ahead of the Reds and 5 ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion in 8th place.
In their most recent match before this one, Tottenham played out a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Jadon Sancho (7’) and Marcus Rashford (44’) gave United a 2-goal lead going to the half-time break. Spurs showed great spirit in the second half by making a comeback to secure a draw through goals from January signing Pedro Porro (56’) and South Korea international Heung-Min Son (79’).
Meanwhile, Liverpool sat in 7th place with 53 points and just a point behind the Lilywhites with a game in hand. Jürgen Klopp’s side were also only 7 points off the top four. The Reds knew that a victory over their North London counterparts at Anfield would see them leapfrog Spurs in the Premier League table.
Liverpool came into this game off the back of a third successive victory after beating David Moyes’ West Ham United side 2-1 at the London Stadium. Dutch forward, Cody Gakpo equalised (18’) for the Reds after a Lucas Paqueta goal for the Hammers (12’). Joël Matip’s (67’) second-half goal turned out to be the winner.
The match did not get off to the best of starts for those of a Tottenham Hotspur persuasion. Curtis Jones gave Liverpool the early lead when his close-range effort round the back of the net following a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross (3’).
Spurs did not have any time to settle after this setback, with the Reds making it 2-0 just a few moments later. Colombian forward Luis Díaz scored when he found the top right corner from very close range after Cody Gakpo found him with a nice pass (5’).
It was 3-0 after 15 minutes had elapsed when Mo Salah scored from a penalty kick that was won by Gakpo (15’).
Harry Kane did manage to score just before the half-time interval when he found the back of the net with a clinical finish following a fantastic Ivan Perisic cross into the box (40’).
It was almost 3-2 a few moments later when Swedish forward Dejan Kulusevski looked to have found the bottom right corner, only for Liverpool’s Brazilian Goalkeeper Alisson Becker to make a fantastic save at close range (41’).
It was a much more even match in the second half, and the Spurs’ comeback looked to be very much a possibility with just over ten minutes to go when Heung-Min Son found the net after receiving the ball via a Cristian Romero through ball (77’). 3-2.
Denmark’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg then went close a couple of minutes later, with his effort going just wide of the post following a Pedro Porro cross (79’).
Then, drama. Richarlison was found in the box by Son, with the Brazilian forward finding the back of the net with a powerful header from close range to complete the comeback (90+3’).
Unfortunately, then came heartbreak. Following an individual error, Diogo Jota managed to steal the ball before successfully finding the bottom right corner of Fraser Forster’s net (90+4’).
It ended in a 4-3 win to Liverpool at Anfield in what was a very entertaining match from minute one.
Liverpool dominated possession with 67.6% possession in comparison to Tottenham’s 32.4%. It was Spurs with more shots on target with 7, with the Reds having 4.
