Home I The Team I First Team Squad I 24. Djed Spence
Djed Spence, standing at 6ft 1in, is a right back who is currently out on loan at Ligue 1 (French Top Flight) side Stade Rennais from Tottenham Hotspur. He joined Spurs on Tuesday 19 July 2022 for a reported fee of £20m from Championship (Second Tier) club Middlesbrough.
Spence began his football career at Fulham in 2016, where he sent a couple of years playing at various age groups before signing for Middlesbrough in 2018. It did not take long for the right full back to make his first senior appearance for the club, which came in August of that year when he played in a 3-3 draw against Notts County at the Riverside Stadium in the Carabao Cup.
The 2018/19 season ended with Boro finishing in 7th place with 73 points to their name – very narrowly missing out on the Promotion play-offs. It was just a point separating themselves and Derby County in 6th, who were occupying the final promotion play-off place.
The Rams, who pipped Boro to 6th, went on to lose out on promotion against Aston Villa in the Championship Final at Wembley.
He then went on to make his Championship and league debut in 1 – 0 success against Charlton Athletic a year later on 7th December 2019, before going on to score his first ever senior goal for the club in a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town a few days later on 26th December 2019.
The defender was declared the EFL (English Football League) Young Player Of The Month a month later on 11th January 2020.
It was a disappointing season overall for Middlesbrough come the end of the 2019/20 season, with the club finishing in 17th place, 5 points clear of the relegation zone. Spence made 24 appearances in all competitions for the club that season, scoring a goal.
The 2020/21 campaign was a much better one for Boro, who ended up with a 10th place finish with 64 points, but they were still a decent distanced between themselves and those promotion play-off positions.
Djed Spence signed for fellow Championship outfit Nottingham Forest in the summer ahead of the start of the 2021/22 season on loan for the duration of that campaign. He swiftly scored his first goal for the club as the Reds beat Birmingham City 3-0 in October 2022 at St. Andrew’s.
Forest and Spence went on a very impressive run in the FA Cup that season, beating Premier League sides Arsenal and Leicester City, who they beat 4-1 at the City Ground.
It was also a very good Championship campaign for Steve Cooper’s side, who beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in the Championship Promotion play-off final to return to the top flight for the first time in more than 20 years.
Following an impressive season, in which he contributed 2 goals and 5 assists in the league to boot, he earned a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur on 19th July 2022.
He is spending the remainder of the 2022/23 Premier League season out on loan at Ligue 1 (French Top Flight) club Stade Rennais.
