Transfers: Jonathan David to sign for Spurs?
The 24-year-old forward has been linked with a move to Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs this summer to strengthen his team’s forward line as they look to challenge to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League.
The 2024 Summer Transfer Window continues to be a busy one up and down the country, and across Europe. Spurs look like they are to remain active in the transfer market in the coming weeks, and recent reports have seen the North London outfit linked with a move for LOSC Lille’s 24 year old Canadian striker Jonathan David.
David’s move to Tottenham is of course only pure speculation as it stands. So far, as of the time of writing, Ange Postecoglou’s side has confirmed the signing of several players, which are the following: Timo Werner (loan with option to buy, From RB Leipzig), Lucas Bergvall (£8.5 million, Djurgardens), Archie Gray (£30 million, Leeds United) and finally Yang Min-hyuk (£1 million, Gangwon FC – set to join in January 2025).
Moving on to Jonathan David himself, he was very prolific for his current club LOSC Lille in all competitions, scoring a grand total of 26 goals in 47 appearances with 9 assists to boot. 19 of these goals came in Ligue 1 alone, together with 4 assists – his incredible efforts up front for his club were enough for a 4th place finish in the French top flight after earning a total of 59 points from their 34 league matches overall. This was enough to see them secure qualification for the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League.
We now rewind to the very beginnings of David’s career, which began as a youth player back in his native Canada with Gloucester Dragons aged 10 in 2010, joining the Ottawa Gloucester Hornets a year later in 2011. He left the club in 2015, before signing for the Ottawa Internationals in 2016 – he did stay with them for two years before being signed by Belgian Giants Gent in 2018, aged 18.
Once he had joined Gent, he immediately became a regular for their first team, making 27 starts in all competitions in the 2018/19 season, scoring 10 goals and getting 4 assists to boot. Those 4 assists came in the league, with 8 of these goals as well – helping his club to a 5thplace finish to qualify for the Europa League.
Then, in the following season (2019/20), Jonathan David showed his ruthless form for the first time, scoring 18 goals and getting 8 assists in 27 league matches to help Gent to a 2nd place finish which helped them qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League. He was the league’s joint leading goal scorer that season too, alongside Dieumerci Mbokani, who was playing for Royal Antwerp at the time.
This was to be his final season in Belgium, joining current club LOSC Lille on 11th August 2020 for a rumoured transfer fee of €30 million, signing an initial five year contract expiring in 2025.
The 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign was David’s first in a Lille shirt, and he was an immediate regular in the starting eleven, playing 37 of the club’s 38 games, scoring a total of 13 goals whilst getting 3 assists. The efforts of the Canada international helped his side to win the Ligue 1 title with a total of no less than 83 points, ending the 9 year dominance of Paris Saint Germain, who finished one point behind Les Dogues in second place.
Jonathan David was even more prolific for Lille in the following campaign, 2021/22, amassing a grand total of no less than 15 goals in Ligue 1 alone, whilst he did also score 3 goals in 8 games in the UEFA Champions League. In the league, his goals helped his side to a 10thplace finish, whilst they made it to the Round of 16, where they were knocked out 4 – 1 on aggregate against Chelsea. Lille had finished top of their Group with 11 points, beating the likes of Sevilla (2 – 1), RB Salzburg (1 – 0), and VFL Wolfsburg (3 – 1).
The Canadian international forward then went on to enjoy the most prolific season of his career to date in the 2022/23 season. In 37 league games, David was able to score a total of no less than 24 goals, getting a further 4 assists, too, to boot. He came third in the individual goal scoring chart that term, only behind Olympique Lyonnais’ Alexandre Lacazette with 27 goals, and then-Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe who scored 29 goals.
Then came his aforementioned most recent season with the club, which saw him score 19 goals and get 4 assists in 34 games, with LOSC Lille finishing in 4th place with 59 points to secure a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League.
If Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham did indeed manage to get this deal for LOSC Lille’s Jonathan David over the line, it would represent some exciting business for Spurs, with the North London side looking to re-secure their place in the top four come the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
Spurs fans are excited for any further potential additions to their squad, as the Lilywhites look to seal a return to the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League come the end of the 2024/25 season.
