As the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was quite outdated, the club looked for different ways to modernise the stadium and improve the location for the players and the fans. Spurs v Brentford Previous Fixture
Spurs 3 – 2 Brentford (Wednesday 31st January 2024)
Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs side took on Thomas Frank’s Brentford most recently on Wednesday, 31st January, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London. Tottenham were looking to take a step closer to UEFA Champions League qualification with a victory against the Bees.
Ahead of this match, Tottenham Hotspur sat in 5th place, with 40 points to their name. They were just three points behind Aston Villa in the fourth and final UEFA Champions League spot, and they knew that a win against Brentford could see them leapfrog Unai Emery’s side into fourth place in the Premier League.
In their most recent Premier League game before facing the Bees, Spurs had played out a competitive 2 – 2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford. Rasmus Højlund gave Erik Ten Hag’s United the lead early on in the contest (3’) before Richarlison found the equalising goal with almost 20 minutes of the game gone to make it 1 – 1 (19’). The Red Devils then re-took the lead through Marcus Rashford (40’), before Rodrigo Bentancur made it 2 – 2 with an equalising goal early in the second half (46’).
Meanwhile, Brentford was sitting in 14th place ahead of this game with at least 22 points to their name. The Bees were one of the many clubs in the midst of a relegation battle, with the London outfit just 6 points above the drop zone. They were looking to gain all three points against Spurs to further distance themselves from the relegation zone and the possibility of relegation back to the EFL Championship.
Thankfully for the Lilywhites, they emerged as 3 – 2 winners against Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Neal Maupay struck first, giving the visiting Bees the lead within the first fifteen minutes. The French forward successfully found the bottom right corner from close range following a swift and effective counterattack (15’).
Timo Werner then forced a great save from Mark Flekken just a few moments later, when the German international forward had seemingly found the bottom left corner, and he then narrowly missed the target (21’).
In the first few minutes after the half time break, Spurs finally found their equalising goal very early on into the second half. Left-back Destiny Udogie’s shot found the back of the net from very close range to restore parity. 1 – 1.
Then, just a minute later, Tottenham took the lead after a shot on goal from Wales international forward Brennan Johnson found the bottom right corner of the Brentford net after he received the ball from fellow forward Timo Werner (49’).
It was then 3 – 1 to Spurs shortly after that when their Brazilian forward Richarlison found the bottom right corner of their visitors’ net, beating keeper Flekken from close range in the Brentford penalty area (56’).
Ivan Toney did manage to pull a goal back to halve the deficit by finding the bottom left corner of Guglielmo Vicario’s net with just over half an hour to go in what was a highly competitive and enthralling contest in North London (67’).
Despite plenty of chances for both sides to add to the scoreline following the game’s fifth goal, there were no more goals. When the final whistle blew, the Spurs confirmed a vitally important three points, thanks to their 3 – 2 win against Thomas Frank’s Brentford side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that day.
Spurs did manage to dominate the possession, having 68.2% of the ball throughout the game compared with 31.8% for the visitors. Both sides had five shots on target each, but the hosts did have more shots on goal in general, with 19 compared with 9 for the Bees that day.
As a result of this victory, Spurs managed to leapfrog Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side into fourth place in the Premier League table, now with 43 points.
