Transfers: Dominic Solanke joins Spurs
The forward has made the move to the North London club from fellow Premier League side Bournemouth ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur has been very active in the 2024 Summer Transfer Window, and on the afternoon of Saturday 10th August, the Lilywhites confirmed the signing of Bournemouth’s 26 year old striker Dominic Solanke.
He follows Timo Werner, Yang Min-hyeok, Lucas Bergvall, and Archie Gray in joining this summer as they look to strengthen their chances of realising their goal of securing a place in the top four and the Champions League once the 2024/25 season is over.
Solanke signs for Spurs for a rumoured transfer fee amounting to £65 million, which includes an initial fee of £55 million with £10 million in potential bonuses according to a report from Sky Sports. He has signed an initial 6 year contract with the North London Club, which is set to expire in June 2030.
Upon joining the club, the forward had this to say (via Spurs’ Official Website): “It means so much – to sign for a club like Tottenham is everything I’ve wanted really. It’s a magnificent club, a huge club with ambitions that match mine so I’m delighted to start and meet all the boys,” he said. “What excites me most about the club is how ambitious it is. It has a great manager, great players and I feel like it suits my style of play as well, so I can’t wait to get started and do my stuff on the pitch.
“I think the club has got great depth throughout the squad. The attacking options are great and I think that’s what a top club needs, so I’m really looking forward to playing with those players, competing with them and hopefully we can achieve great things. Obviously Heung-Min Son is a fantastic player, he’s been doing what he’s been doing in the Premier League for many years now and there’s many players like I mentioned before throughout the whole team that have got great qualities. At a big club like Tottenham, you expect to be around great players and I’m looking forward to mingling with them.”
Dominic Solanke enjoyed a simply sensational season in the Premier League with Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth last season. He played in all 38 matches in the English top flight in 2023/24 – scoring no less than 19 goals, together with 3 assists to boot. The forward’s goal tally saw him end last term sat joint 4th in the goal scoring charts, together with Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
The only players to have scored more goals last season in the Premier League were Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak (21 Goals), Chelsea’s Cole Palmer (22 Goals) and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland with 27 goals in total.
Solanke is a product of Chelsea’s youth academy. His first loan spell came with Dutch Eredivisie outfit Vitesse Arnhem, with whom he made 27 appearances in all competitions in the 2015/16 campaign. In the league, he scored 7 goals whilst getting an assist to boot to help his side to a 9thplace finish with a total of 46 points – missing out on European Football by a margin of just 2 points in the end.
He then signed for Liverpool in 2017, with whom he made very few senior appearances before signing for Bournemouth in 2018 for a fee of £19 million.
Following relegation from the Premier League to the EFL Championship, the 2020/21 campaign was when Dominic Solanke showed ruthless goalscoring form, scoring a grand total of 15 goals together with providing no less than 11 assists to boot. The Cherries finished 6th, losing to Brentford in the Promotion Play-Off Semi Finals.
It was promotion joy for Solanke and Bournemouth in the season that followed, 2021/22, finishing in 2nd place with a total of 88 points to their name. During this very successful campaign, the forward was able to score an incredible total of 29 goals in 46 matches for the South Coast side, together with 7 assists to boot.
Solanke scored 6 goals whilst getting 7 assists in his first season back in the Premier League with Bournemouth in 2022/23, helping his team to avoid relegation by securing a solid 15th place finish with a margin of 5 points between themselves and relegation in the end.
Then came his highly prolific 2023/24 season, where he scored his aforementioned 19 goals together with 3 assists to boot. His efforts did help the Cherries to a 12th place finish with a points total that stood at 48 after all 38 games had been played in the top flight.
Dominic Solanke is an exciting addition to the Spurs squad, and the club’s forward line looks even stronger, with Ange Postecoglou also having the likes of Son Heung-Min, Brennan Johnson, and Richarlison at his disposal.
Tottenham get their 2024/25 Premier League campaign underway with an away trip to the King Power Stadium to face Steve Cooper’s newly promoted Leicester City in a 20:00 kick-off on Monday 19th August.
Spurs’ first home game of the season will then follow a few days later with a contest against Sean Dyche’s Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a 15:00 kick-off on Saturday 24th August 2024.
