Spurs vs. Brentford Match Preview
Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs will look to make it two wins in a row in all competitions with a win in their Premier League game against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
Following some Carabao Cup action in midweek, Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham Hotspur side will be returning to Premier League action this weekend when they take on fellow London side Brentford, who are led by their Danish Head Coach Thomas Frank. The game is set to kick off at 15:00 at the home of the Lilywhites, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Saturday 21st September 2024.
The Lilywhites’ most recent game in the top flight saw them face their North London rivals Arsenal at home in the first North London Derby of the 2024/25 season. Unfortunately for Spurs, despite having some chances to score some goals, they, in the end, suffered a narrow 1 – 0 defeat against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners side, who scored through a headed goal from central defender Gabriel (64’).
Spurs did though emerge victorious in their opening game in this season’s Carabao Cup in midweek, ahead of their game against Brentford. Postecoglou’s side came face to face with EFL Championship side Coventry City, led by Mark Robins, in the Third Round of the competition at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday night. Late goals from Djed Spence (88’) and Brennan Johnson (90+2’) confirmed a 2 – 1 win for the Lilywhites, securing them passage into Round Four.
Now, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham will be targeting a second win in as many games in all competitions when they face Brentford in North London this weekend.
Moving on to the Bees, they faced reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City in their most recent Premier League contest at the Etihad Stadium. Thomas Frank and his team lost narrowly 2 – 1 thanks to a brace from their star striker Erling Haaland, with both of these goals coming in the first half (19’, 32’). This did come after the visitors scored in the opening minute through Yoane Wissa (1’).
They then took part in the Third Round of this year’s Carabao Cup, which saw them defeat League Two outfit Leyton Orient 3 – 1 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Former Liverpool attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho found the back of the net for the Bees (17’), as did Mikkel Damsgaard (26’) and Christian Norgaard (45’) in the first half. Brandon Cooper scored to give the O’s an initial shock lead in West London with barely more than ten minutes having elapsed (11’).
So, ahead of this Premier League game between Spurs and Brentford, Postecoglou’s team currently find themselves sat in 13th place with 4 points to their name after 4 games to date, so far. All three points for Tottenham could see the Lilywhites climb to 8th place should other results go their way.
As for the Bees, the win for them would potentially see them climb as high as 5th place due to goal difference.
The most recent Premier League tie to have taken place between these two London rivals took place back in the 2023/24 season, also at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on 31st January 2024. In the end, it was a competitive and enthralling contest that saw Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites take all three points thanks to a 3 – 2 victory in North London.
Destiny Udogie (48’), Brennan Johnson (49’), and Richarlison (56’) found the back of the net, whilst it was Neal Maupay (15’) and Ivan Toney (67’) who found both scored the goals for the Bees on the day.
Overall, these two clubs have met a total of 48 times, and it is Tottenham who has the superior record of 25 victories compared with Brentford’s total of 7 wins to date. As of the time of writing, there have been 16 draws between these two teams so far.
