Premier League: Ipswich Town 1 – 4 Spurs Match Review

Ipswich Town 1 - 4 Spurs

Tottenham’s victory against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon was a third Premier League win in a row for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur side came face to face with a relegation threatened Ipswich Town side led by their Head Coach Kieran McKenna at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon. It was the latest game of the 2024/25 Premier League season for Spurs, who were looking to strengthen their hopes for European Football and continue their excellent recent run of form with a victory against the Tractor Boys.

They got the all-important three points, beating Ipswich comfortably 4 – 1 away from home to make it a third Premier League victory in a row with Tottenham continuing to climb up the table.

The goal scorers on that day for the visitors from North London were Djed Spence (77’), Dejan Kulusevski (84’), as well as Brennan Johnson, who found the back of the host’s net on two occasions to secure him a brace in this game (18’, 26’). Their efforts mean that their team gets closer to those European Qualification places in the English Top Flight.

As previously mentioned, this victory is their third in a row in the Premier League, and it sees the North London outfit still sat in 12th place, but the gap to the European places has been reduced to within 10 points, which is a gap that Tottenham will feel that they can close. This is very possible with the number of games remaining and if Spurs do continue their great run of form.

Spurs can also be certain of qualification for the UEFA Champions League if they win the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League, which is a competition where they are amongst the favourites to win it. In the Round of 16, Postecoglou’s side will be coming face to face with Dutch club AZ Alkmaar over two legs.

They are also just 4 points adrift of London rivals Brentford, whilst fellow rivals from the Capital Fulham are themselves just 6 points ahead of Tottenham at the moment, as of the time of writing. In the next few games, Spurs will be very optimistic that they can leapfrog both of these clubs and get themselves firmly into the top half of the Premier League table.

Spurs are continuing to build momentum, which is something that they will be looking to build throughout what remains of this campaign.

Match Highlights:

Why not re-live Spurs’ sensational, ruthless, and crucial 4 – 1 triumph against Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the Premier League by taking a look at the full match highlights below:

Match Review:

In this game, it was the hosts Ipswich Town who had the first effort on goal, with Liam Delap forcing a save from the recently returned Guglielmo Vicario before former Villa forward Jaden Philogene had a shot blocked within just the first minute of the match (1’).

The aforementioned Delap then hit the post a few moments later (6’), whilst Philogene had another effort blocked well by the Spurs backline (7’).

Spurs’ first effort of the game came courtesy of their 19 year old Swedish international midfielder Lucas Bergvall, whose effort on goal was blocked well by the Tractor Boys’ defence with the game remaining on level terms (13’).

Then, just after Son Heung-Min had narrowly missed the target, Spurs did manage to get the opening goal when Wales international forward Brennan Johnson was able to find the back of the Ipswich net from close range after Son had managed to find him with an accurate ball across the penalty box to make it one nil to the visitors (18’).

The Spurs defence was then resilient once again, with a Jack Clarke effort being saved (20’) before a subsequent effort from the aforementioned Liam Delap was blocked well by the hosts in order to retain their advantage (21’).

Then shortly after that, Tottenham was successful in doubling their advantage in the first half when Johnson was able to find the back of the net, this time finding the bottom right corner thanks to a superb, accurate finish that gave the ‘keeper no chance (26’).

It was also then close to becoming 3 – 0 to Spurs, but an effort on target from Son Heung-Min was saved well by the Ipswich Town stopper Alex Palmer with almost half an hour gone in the game (27’).

Then, just before half time, the hosts were able to halve the deficit when Omari Hutchinson, formerly of Spurs’ fierce West London rivals Chelsea, was able to find the back of the Tottenham net via the bottom right corner thanks to a superb finish just before the break (36’).

The half time whistle then came shortly after following a short period of stoppage time in the first half with Spurs holding a narrow 2 – 1 lead going into the second half of this game against Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the Premier League.

Early on in the second half, Brennan Johnson almost got his first career hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur when the Lilywhites forward had a shot on goal get blocked well by the home defence to keep it at 2 – 1 (62’).

Then a short time after that, Tottenham managed to restore their two goal advantage after a goal from right full back Djed Spence, who was able to find the top left corner after having received the ball into his feet from James Maddison (77’).

The fourth and final Spurs goal to make it 4 – 1 to the visitors came in the last few minutes of the game when a superb and low curling effort from Sweden’s Dejan Kulusevski found the bottom left corner from a shot that came from the right hand side of the box. He had received the ball into his feet from substitute forward Dane Scarlett (84’).

The full time whistle soon went, with Spurs coming away with a ruthless, thoroughly deserved, and emphatic 4 – 1 victory away from home against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Match Stats:

This enthralling game saw Spurs dominate in several statistics aside from the scoreline. Tottenham had the most possession with 58.9% compared to Ipswich Town’s 41.1% throughout the ninety minutes.

Whilst hosts Ipswich had more shots, it was Spurs who had the most efforts on target with 6 compared with 5 for their hosts.

Ange Postecoglou’s Post Match Thoughts:

Following the game against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town at Portman Road, Spurs Head Coach Ange Postecoglou had the following to say after what was a ruthless and emphatic performance from his team (via Spurs’ official website):

“They are fighting for their lives, and you saw that right from the start, the crowd got behind them and we knew it was going to be a challenge for us, but we showed some real resilience and fought hard when we needed to fight hard.

“In the first half we didn’t quite handle the second ball scenario as well as we wanted to, conceded a poor goal, but in the second half I thought we were really good with that. We were always a threat going forward, I thought Sonny was outstanding in that first half and it’s just so good to get Brennan back and scoring the goals we know he can.”
