Manchester United 0 – 3 Spurs Match Review

Manchester United 0 - 3 Spurs

A memorable afternoon at Old Trafford saw Spurs comfortably beat Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United in the Premier League.

Spurs, led by their Australian Head Coach Ange Postecoglou, came head to head with Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United in the 2024/25 Premier League season at Old Trafford at the weekend. After victory against Brentford in North London, the Lilywhites were looking to make it two wins in a row at the Theatre Of Dreams.

Ultimately, it was an incredible performance from Tottenham Hotspur who came away with a comfortable 3 – 0 victory at the home of the Red Devils thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke. It was an eventful contest that also saw Bruno Fernandes get sent off for the hosts towards the end of the first half.

Following this game, Spurs rose to 8th place, now with a total of 10 points to their name. They are now just three points behind the top four, and only five behind early pace setters Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League table.

Match Review:

The game itself could not have got off to a better start for Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs side, taking an early lead through the in-form Brennan Johnson who found the back of the net from close range after receiving the ball from central defender Micky van de Ven (3’).

Tottenham’s advantage was almost doubled with barely more than ten minutes having elapsed. James Maddison had an effort on goal saved well by United Goalkeeper Andre Onana, with the ball looking like it was going to nestle into the bottom left corner of the net. It was Dejan Kulusevski who found the England International in the penalty area (11’).

Another chance came just a minute later through Destiny Udogie, whose effort flew narrowly over the crossbar (12’). Then, just moments later, goal scorer Johnson had an effort that hit the post after receiving a pass from Kulusevski (20’).

Manchester United did have a chance of their own a couple of minutes later through Joshua Zirkzee, who forced a simply sensational save from Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs net (22’). England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was the player to find the 23 year old Dutch forward in the box.

A flurry of chances then came for the visitors. The first one with exactly half an hour gone saw Maddison force a great save from Onana to keep it at 1 – 0 (30’). This was followed up quickly by Dejan Kulusevski, who had an effort get blocked well by the Red Devils’ defenders (31’).

Udogie then had another chance of his own, only for his shot on goal to also get blocked by the hosts (32’).

Tottenham were given a helping hand by Ten Hag’s United just before half time when they were reduced to ten men when Bruno Fernandes was sent off after the Portuguese international was shown a red card after his tackle on James Maddison (42’).

The Lilywhites were 1 – 0 up at half time after what was a dominant first half at Old Trafford for the visitors.

It did not take long for Tottenham to double their advantage in the second half. The aforementioned Dejan Kulusevski then got a goal of his own when the Sweden International forward found the bottom left corner following a swift attack from the visitors (47’).

It was almost 3 – 0 shortly after that when Pedro Porro had a shot on goal himself. However, the right back instead forced a good save from Onana after he was fed the ball by goal scorer Dejan Kulusevski (53’).

Two chances then came in quick succession. Timo Werner saw his effort on goal get saved well by Andre Onana following a through ball from Kulusevski before Solanke also had an effort saved by United’s Goalkeeper just seconds later (56’).

Tottenham Hotspur finally made it 3 – 0 with barely more than ten minutes to go in the ninety minutes when summer signing Dominic Solanke found the back of the net from very close range to put the game out of sight for the hosts. It was a goal that came from a ball into the box from midfielder Pape Matar Sarr following a corner kick (77’).

Solanke then came close to making it four early on in second half stoppage time (90+1’), which was then followed by other chances for Pape Matar Sarr (90+2’) and young starlet Mikey Moore (90+6’), who both had efforts on goal go wide.

The full time whistle then went to confirm what was a deserved and emphatic 3 – 0 victory at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Premier League.

It was Tottenham who had the superior record of 60.8% possession compared with the hosts’ total of 39.2% for United. The visitors also had the most shots (24) and shots on target (10), this is compared to the Red Devils total of 11 shots, with 2 of these finding the target.

Ange Postecoglou’s post-match thoughts:

This is what Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Ange Postecoglou had to say following the game (via the official Spurs Website): “It was a great win, but an even better performance. I thought the lads were outstanding today, from the first minute they were at it, really aggressive without the ball, positive with the ball, won our duels, aggressive in everything we did. I’m just super proud of the boys’ efforts.

“Their red card is a consequence of our dominance, we put them under so much pressure, they couldn’t really get out of their half. We probably should have been out of sight by that stage with the chances we had, but even after that, against 10 men, I still felt we controlled the game really well. There is no doubt we deserved that victory.”

Next Up for Spurs:

Next up for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs is a Premier League game at the Amex Stadium on the South Coast against Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton, with the game set to kick-off at 16:30pm on Sunday 6th October.

Spurs’ next home game will see them face Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham in a London Derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday 19th October 2024.
