Coventry City 1 – 2 Spurs Match Review
Ange Postecoglou’s side secure a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after late comeback saw them beat Coventry on Wednesday.
In what was a break from Premier League action, Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs side travelled to the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday night to face EFL Championship outfit Coventry City, led by former Manchester United, Norwich, and Leicester City forward Mark Robins.
Coventry came close to promotion to the Premier League back in the 2022/23 season, losing on penalties to Luton Town in that year’s EFL Championship Play-Off Final. After finishing in 9th place in the second tier last season, they are currently sitting 14th in the league table after 5 matches.
For this game, Tottenham made a total of eight changes from the North London Derby against Arsenal, with Fraser Forster, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Matar Sarr, Timo Werner, and Wilson Odobert coming in for Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-Min, Dominic Solanke, and Brennan Johnson.
The last time that Spurs won the League Cup, last doing so back in 2008, when they were 2 – 1 winners at Wembley against West London rivals Chelsea after extra time. Dimitar Berbatov (70’ – Penalty) and Jonathan Woodgate (94’).
The Lilywhites will be looking to add to their trophy cabinet, and this victory in the Third Round in the West Midlands against Coventry takes them a step closer to potential glory at Wembley Stadium.
Now we move on to the game itself. Within the first minute of the contest, it was the hosts who had the opening opportunity of the contest when former Huddersfield Town and AFC Wimbledon attacking midfielder Jack Rudoni had a shot on goal from outside of the Spurs penalty area, which was saved well by Fraser Forster (1’).
Then, with almost half an hour gone, Milan van Ewijk had an effort blocked by the Spurs defence to keep the game level a 0 – 0 (28’). There were some further chances in the remainder of that first half through Jack Rudoni (38’) and Norman Bassette (39’), but resilient Tottenham defending ensured that the game remained level and goalless at half time.
It was Postecoglou’s Tottenham who had the opening opportunity of the second half through Brennan Johnson. The Wales international forward saw his shot on goal get blocked well by the Coventry defenders to maintain parity (48’).
Following chances for Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante (56’, 57’), there was a great opportunity for Spurs defender Ben Davies, who forced a great save from Coventry Goalkeeper Ben Wilson with barely more than half an hour of the game remaining (59’).
Then, just a few moments later, Tottenham fell behind when hosts Coventry City took the lead when former West Brom and Salford City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante found the back of the net to give Mark Robins’ side the all-important advantage over their Premier League opponents (63’).
Djed Spence then had an opportunity to put his team on level terms, but the Spurs full-back saw a long-range effort on goal fly agonisingly wide of the left post after receiving the ball from James Maddison (69’).
Then, the next chance for Spurs came the way of the aforementioned Maddison, who had a long-range strike fly just wide of the left post after having got the ball from central defender Radu Dragusin (77’).
Dejan Kulusevski then had two chances in very quick succession. The Sweden international first forced a save from Coventry Stopper Wilson, before then having a second strike on goal blocked by the hosts’ defenders (80’).
Then, with just a couple of minutes left in normal time, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs finally got their equaliser through Djed Spence, who found the bottom left corner from within the penalty area in dramatic fashion after receiving the ball from Kulusevski (88’).
To the delight of Spurs fans, with the game looking like it would be heading for extra time, Brennan Johnson was the hero when he scored what turned out to be the winning goal on the night early on in second half stoppage time (90+2’).
The game ended with Spurs winning 2 – 1 against Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday evening, with safe passage being secured to the Fourth Round of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup.
It was Tottenham who had the most possession with them having no less than 69.8% of the ball compared to the home side who had 30.2%. Coventry City did have more shots, 15, with more going on target with Spurs having 4 of their 9 total shots find the target in the game.
Next up for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs is a Premier League game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against London rivals Brentford. The game will be taking place in North London on Saturday 21st September 2024, with the contest kicking off at 15:00 on that afternoon.
