Manchester City 0 - 4 Spurs Review

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur team sealed an emphatic victory against reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Spurs came face to face with reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City in their latest match of the 2024/25 season at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Lilywhites were looking to strengthen their hopes of a top four spot and qualification for next year’s UEFA Champions League with a win.

It was a statement 4 – 0 victory for Tottenham with the North London outfit in ruthless form against Guardiola’s side.

James Maddison (2), Pedro Porro, and Brennan Johnson were on target in what was an emphatic and ruthless performance from the away side. This game will give them a very welcome boost as they look to re-establish themselves amongst Europe’s elite.

Following this stunning victory, Tottenham have now risen to 6th place in the Premier League table with a total of 19 points to their name after having played 12 of their top flight matches early on into the 2024/25 season. They are now just three points adrift of North London rivals Arsenal, who currently occupy the final Champions League Qualification spot in 4th place as things currently stand.

Tottenham are also just 4 points behind City, who occupy 2nd place following their defeat against their North London counterparts at the weekend. This result ought to build some further momentum for Ange Postecoglou and his team as they continue their top flight campaign.

Match Highlights:

Why not re-live Spurs’ sensational 4 – 0 triumph against Manchester City at the Etihad by taking a look at the full match highlights below:

Match Review:

The hosts Manchester City did have a couple of early opportunities, which both came from the boots of Erling Haaland. The Norwegian forward missed his first opportunity (3’), before seeing his second effort on goal get well blocked just a couple of minutes later (5’).

Then, after Haaland had forced a great save from Guglielmo Vicario (11’), Tottenham opened the scoring just a couple of moments later when the attacking midfielder found the bottom left corner from very close range with a first time finish, having been found in the penalty area by forward Dejan Kulusevski via a cross (13’).

Son Heung-Min then forced a save, coming tantalisingly close to doubling his side’s advantage on the day (18’).

Tottenham did not have to wait too long to find their second goal of the game though, as Maddison managed to score another goal to seal his brace, with his chip beating the ‘keeper before finding the bottom left corner of the net. This time, it was Son who found him in the penalty box (20’).

Another opportunity came the way of the visitors with almost half an hour having elapsed. Summer signing Dominic Solanke forced a sensational stop from Ederson in the Manchester City goal with an effort that had looked initially destined to find the back of the Cityzens’ net. It was Son once again who created this opportunity (28’).

In the latter stages of the first half, Yves Bissouma did have a chance himself to score, but the midfielder missed the target from long range after being fed the ball by Swedish forward Dejan Kulusevski (42’).

Then just a minute later Savinho had a chance of his own for hosts City, but the Brazilian saw his shot get blocked before Phil Foden missed the target just seconds later (43’).

The half time whistle then went to end what had been a sensational first half performance from Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur, who were two goals to the good at the Etihad Stadium at the break.

The second half was still in its early stages when Tottenham got their third goal of the game thanks to their Spanish right back Pedro Porro, with the defender successfully finding the top left corner with a superb first time finish (53’).

Dejan Kulusevski then forced Ederson into a great save shortly after, with this opportunity coming at the midway point of the second half (66’). Rico Lewis then missed a chance of his own for City, with his effort on goal flying too high over the target (67’).

Tottenham then had to hold firm, and they withstood some pressure from the hosts when Vicario was forced into a great save with just under twenty minutes left (73’) before Ilkay Gundogan forced another save from Spurs’ Italian Stopper (77’).

Spurs fans were already celebrating what was a superb performance and victory when deep into the second half stoppage time their team scored their fourth goal of the game through Brennan Johnson, who found the bottom right corner of the City net after fellow forward Timo Werner was able to find the Wales international in the hosts’ penalty area (90+3’).

Match Stats:

In terms of possession, hosts Manchester City had the most of the ball over the course of the ninety minutes with 57.6% of the ball, whilst their visitors Spurs had 42.4%. As for shots on target, Postecoglou’s Tottenham had the most with no less than 7 – two more than City’s total of 5.

The visitors were more clinical in this game, with all but two of their 9 shots in total finding the target, whilst the hosts had 23 shots with only about a quarter of them finding their intended target.

Ange Postecoglou’s Post Match Thoughts:

Following this statement victory achieved in emphatic fashion against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Spurs Boss Ange Postecoglou had this to say about the performance of his team on Sunday afternoon (via the official Spurs Website):

“The lads were outstanding. We’ve obviously had a tough couple of weeks, but we’ve stuck together, not lost belief and were really determined today to put in a strong performance. We doubled down on our football beliefs. City, their form wasn’t great coming into this, but their four losses were away, they’re a different prospect at home. You could see that in the first 10 minutes in the way they came out. We had to do a bit of everything, defend, work hard, be disciplined and our football had to be at the highest level, and it was. The players delivered in all areas, and credit to them.”

Next Up For Spurs:

Next up for Spurs is their fifth League Phase game of the Europa League against Italian outfit Roma at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday 28th November 2024, in what will be a 20:00 Kick-Off.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham will then go toe to toe with Marco Silva’s Fulham when they return to Premier League action on Sunday 1st December 2024, also at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London, with all of the action getting underway at 13:30 early that afternoon.
