Europa League: Spurs vs. Roma Match Preview

After a successful return to Premier League action, last weekend with a statement 4 – 0 victory against Manchester City, Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs side are now set to continue their 2024/25 UEFA Europa League campaign with a League Phase game against Italian Serie A heavyweights Roma, led by their Head Coach Claudio Ranieri.

Tottenham are set to take on Roma in a 20:00 Kick-Off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London on the evening of Thursday 28th November 2024. This is one of the Lilywhites standout and most high profile fixtures in Europe this season, with the game promising to bring with it a sensational atmosphere to boot.

However, despite their best efforts, Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 3 – 2 by Turkish Heavyweights Galatasaray in Istanbul in their most recent game in this competition. Will Lankshear (18’) and Dominic Solanke (69’) were both on target for the Premier League side that day, while it was Yunus Akgun (6’) and Victor Osimhen (31’, 39’) who were both the goal scorers for the hosts on that day.

The Giallorossi are currently sat 12th in the Serie A table having earned 13 points from as many games so far this season, which includes just 3 victories. Roma are coming into this game off the back of a 1 – 0 defeat at the hands of Napoli thanks to a goal from former West Brom, Everton, and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku (54’).

This will be the first time that Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma have ever met in a competitive fixture, so this will be a historic game and occasion for both teams.

Historically, Spurs do have a good record against Italian teams in general in all competitions, having won 6 of their 19 matches against teams from this country. They have also drawn 7 times and have had 6 defeats, scoring 24 goals and conceding 23.

Tottenham’s most recent encounter with an Italian team in the Europa League came in the Round of 32 in the 2015/16 season, beating Fiorentina 3 – 0 on the night at White Hart Lane which completed an emphatic 4 – 1 aggregate victory against I Viola. Ryan Mason (25’) and Erik Lamela (63’) were both on target for the home team, whilst there was also an own goal from Fiorentina’s Gonzalo Rodriguez on that day, late on into this game (81’).
