Spurs v Brentford Premier League Match Preview

A win against Brentford could see Spurs leapfrog Brighton into 6th place as Ryan Mason’s side continue to challenge for European Football.

Tottenham Hotspur will be welcoming Thomas Frank’s Brentford side to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 20th May 2023. This will be a very important match for Ryan Mason’s Lilywhites, who are continuing to challenge for European Football.

If Spurs emerge victorious against the Bees, they will be able to leapfrog Brighton into 6th place, should the Seagulls fail to beat Newcastle United on Thursday evening. A win would also see Tottenham move 7 points clear of Brentford.

Also, should Villa lose against Liverpool, Mason’s team will move three clear of Unai Emery’s side with a win.

At the time of writing, Spurs sit in 7th place with 57 points, and are just 1 behind Brighton in 6th place. However, Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls will have a game in hand when Tottenham play Brentford on Saturday.

Should Frank’s Bees secure all three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they would move to within one point of the Lilywhites with one more game to play for both sides. This would also keep Brentford’s hopes of European Football alive.

In their most recent match, Tottenham were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa at Villa Park. Jacob Ramsey (8’) and Douglas Luiz (72’) scored for Emery’s side, with Harry Kane finding the net from the penalty spot in the final moments of the game for Spurs (90’).

Spurs’ latest victory of the season came against Crystal Palace, where they were able to beat Roy Hodgson’s side 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kane in first half stoppage time (45+1’).

As for Brentford, their most recent victory came against West Ham United at the GTech Community Stadium. It was a 2-0 win for Frank’s side, with both Bryan Mbeumo (20’) and Yoane Wissa (43’) finding the net for the Bees.

Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford met for the first time in a league match on 15th March 1902. Unfortunately, Spurs were defeated 2-1 on that occasion. Tom Smith got the Lilywhite’s only goal of the game.

Overall, the two London clubs have met a total of 45 times. Historically, it is Spurs with a superior record of 24 wins in comparison to Brentford’s 6.

The most recent match between these two teams came on 26th December 2022 in what was a 2-2 draw. Harry Kane (65’) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (71’) scored for Spurs, whilst it was Vitaly Janelt (15’) and Ivan Toney (54’) who found the net for the Bees.

Speaking of Ivan Toney, the forward received an 8 month ban from all football from the Football Association this week so will miss the game against Spurs and Brentford’s final match of the season against Manchester City.

This game against Brentford will be Spurs’ last at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Ryan Mason will be hoping that his side will come away from the match with all three points as they continue to challenge for European Football.

Relegation threatened Leeds United will be Tottenham’s final game of the 2022/23 Premier League season at Elland Road, where the Lilywhites will be hoping to end this campaign on a high.
