Spurs v Wolves Preview

Ange Postecoglou’s side don’t just have the opportunity to remain in the top four with a win; they could also close the gap to third place with all three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham head into this weekend’s round of Premier League football sat in fourth place with a total of 47 points accumulated from their 24 matches in the 2023/24 season to date. Ange Postecoglou’s side have won three of their last five matches in the league, which has seen them leapfrog Aston Villa into the Champions League positions.

Spurs are set to face Wolves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a 15:00 kick-off. A win against Gary O’Neil’s side would allow them to maintain their grip on their place in the Premier League’s top four. Additionally, if they get all three points, they could move within touching distance of North London rivals Arsenal in third place.

Spurs’ most recent game saw them welcome Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton & Hove Albion to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London last weekend. In the end, Postecoglou’s Lilywhites emerged as 2 – 1 winners after coming back from a goal down against the Seagulls.

German midfielder Pascal Gross gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot in the opening 20 minutes of the match (17’), and his side remained in the lead for a considerable amount of time. Spurs did finally find their equalising goal, restoring parity at 1 – 1 after a goal from Senegal international Pape Matar Sarr with barely under half an hour of the contest remaining (61’).

Going into the second half stoppage time, it did look as if it would be ending in a 1 – 1 stalemate between these two sides. But, thankfully for Spurs, they found a winning goal through forward Brennan Johnson (90+6’).

These three points saw Spurs take advantage of Aston Villa’s narrow defeat against Manchester United to move back into the top four.

The result against their South Coast counterparts is one of many standout results from the 2023/24 season for the Lilywhites.

The first of these standout results came in Tottenham Hotspur’s first home game of the season on 19th August 2023. It was a comfortable 2 – 0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United. Pape Matar Sarr (49’) and an own goal from Lisandro Martinez (83’) sealed the points for Spurs.

Another result that stood out was an emphatic 5 – 2 victory at Turf Moor against Vincent Kompany’s newly promoted Burnley on Saturday, 2nd September 2023. A Son Heung-Min hat-trick (16’, 63’, 66’) and goals from Cristian Romero (45+2’) and James Maddison (54’) confirmed the three points for the Lilywhites.

After a comeback win against Sheffield United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a brace from Son Heung-Min (42’, 55’) secured an impressive 2 – 2 North London Derby draw against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

There was also that statement 2 – 1 victory against Liverpool, a 3 – 3 draw against Manchester City and an emphatic 4 – 1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Destiny Udogie (26’), Richarlison (38’, 60’) and a Son Heung-Min penalty kick (85’) ensured the win for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Wolves’ most recent result was a 2 – 0 defeat at the hands of Thomas Frank’s Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium last weekend (Saturday, 10th February).

Now let’s move on to the Spurs’ game against Gary O’Neil’s Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, 17th February 2024, in a 15:00 kick-off.

The most recent Premier League match contested between these two sides took place was at Molineux on 11th November 2023, when Tottenham lost 2 – 1.

Spurs’ most recent league win against their West Midlands counterparts took place back on 20th August 2022, where a goal from leading all-time club goal scorer Harry Kane (64’) in the early stages of the second half ensured a 1 – 0 win.

Overall, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers have met on no less than 105 occasions, including Spurs’ 2 – 1 win at White Hart Lane in the Division Two on 1st September 1908. It is the North London side who have the superior record of 52 wins to date in this fixture, compared to Wolves’ 32. There have been 21 draws played out between these two teams as of the time of writing.

Excitement and anticipation are building rapidly ahead of kick-off, with Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs looking to continue their push for a UEFA Champions League spot.
