Aston Villa v Spurs Preview

A crucial game is taking place at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon, as both Villa and Tottenham look to add further momentum to their challenge for UEFA Champions League football this season.

As we get closer to the conclusion of the 2023/24 Premier League season, each win and every point earned could prove crucial in achieving ambitions for the current campaign. Of course, Aston Villa and Spurs are no different, with both clubs currently embroiled in a tense battle for UEFA Champions League football for next season.

Aston Villa and Spurs will come face to face for what is likely to be a pivotal game at Villa Park on Sunday 10th March 2024, with the game kicking off at 13:00 on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side currently find themselves sat in 5th place with 50 points having been accumulated from their 26 matches to date in the top flight. This means they currently have a 6-point lead on Manchester United in 6th place, but the gap to Sunday’s opponents, Villa, stands at just 5 points as of the time of writing.

As for Unai Emery’s Villa, their 5 point lead on Spurs sees them sat in the final UEFA Champions League qualification spot in 4th place after having accumulated no less than 55 points from their 27 matches in the Premier League as it stands.

Spurs do have the advantage of having a game in hand, with their postponed game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge yet to be played. All three points for the Lilywhites on Sunday would leave them with a gap of just 2 points between themselves and their Second City counterparts.

However, should Villa win the battle of Villa Park, they will grow the gap between themselves and Spurs to 8 points and United could close the gap to 3 as well. However, the North London club would still have the comfort of a game in hand, which gives them an extra opportunity to close the gap to Villa, and to extend their lead on Manchester United.

The most recent Premier League result for Tottenham saw them emerge as 3 – 1 winners in the Premier League against Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week.

Eagles forward Eberechi Eze gave the visitors the lead early in the second half with a superb free-kick (59’). Timo Werner was then on hand to restore parity at 1 – 1 with his first ever goal for the Lilywhites that day (77’). There was further joy to come at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Argentine central defender Cristian Romero gave his team the lead for the first time in the game (80’). Son Heung-Min was then able to put the game beyond doubt at 3 – 1, just over 10 minutes later (88’).

As for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, their most recent game in the Premier League saw them come face to face with a Luton Town side led by Head Coach Rob Edwards at Kenilworth Road one week ago. It was a tight and tense game that saw the visiting Villans edge the game as 3 – 2 winners in the end.

Ollie Watkins, the leading goal scorer for the Villa so far this term, gave the visitors the lead with almost 25 minutes gone (24’), before latching on to a quick free-kick taken by Douglas Luiz to make it 2 – 0 just before half time (38’). Luton fought back to level terms at 2 – 2, with their goals coming from Tahith Chong (66’) and Carlton Morris (72’). However, the Hatters were though eventually beaten 3 – 2 thanks to a header from Lucas Digne (89’) in the dying embers of the game following a great ball into the box from French Forward Moussa Diaby.

The most recent competitive game to be played between Aston Villa and Spurs took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium took place on Sunday 26th November 2024, which saw Villa win 2 – 1. Giovani Lo Celso gave the Lilywhites the lead, before Spanish central defender Pau Torres levelled things up, restoring parity at 1 – 1 in first half stoppage time (45+7’). The Villans’ winning goal came with just under half an hour of the game remaining (61’).

Overall, these two clubs have played against each other competitively no less than 173 times, and Tottenham Hotspur has a superior record of 77 wins compared to Villa’s 60. There has been 60 draws between them to date.

In terms of team news, Spurs could see the return of Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson, whilst Richarlison, Manor Solomon and Goalkeeper Fraser Forster all continue to be unavailable for selection by Ange Postecoglou.

Moving on to Aston Villa, they could see the return of midfielder Jacob Ramsey, with Pau Torres likely to start. However, Jhon Duran is out, as are long term absentees Tyrone Mings, Emiliano Buendia and Boubacar Kamara.

Excitement and anticipation is building rapidly ahead of what is set to be a crucial and potentially pivotal game in the Premier League between Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park on Sunday 10th March 2024 in a 13:00 kick-off in B6.
