Spurs vs. Crystal Palace Preview

Spurs v Crystal Palace 2324

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side will look to narrow the gap between themselves and the top four in the Premier League with a win against the Eagles at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As we enter March 2024, the 2023/24 Premier League season is approaching its final stages, and the fight for UEFA Champions League football for next season is very much still on – and Spurs are amongst the leading contenders to secure qualification. A return to Europe’s premier club competition is one of Ange Postecoglou’s primary targets for Spurs come the end of the current campaign.

Tottenham now face Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 2nd March in what will be a 15:00 kick-off that afternoon. It will offer the hosts an opportunity to close the gap to just a single point between themselves and Aston Villa, who occupy the fourth and final UEFA Champions League qualification spot in 4th place.

If Spurs win, this one point gap will be maintained should Unai Emery’s Villa side lose their game against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on the same day. If the Villans secure a point and a draw from the Hatters, this would not be a bad result for the Lilywhites either, should they beat the Eagles, as the gap would be just 2 points.

As it stands, the gap between Spurs and Aston Villa is currently at 5 points, but the former do have a game in hand on their Second City counterparts.

There is set to be a massive match between these two football clubs, and it will be taking place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, 10th March 2024, in what will be a 13:00 kick-off.

The most recent Premier League result for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs saw them narrowly defeated 2 – 1 by Gary O’Neil’s Wolves in North London.

As for Crystal Palace, this will be new Head Coach Oliver Glasner’s first away game in charge in the Premier League, and he is looking to guide the Eagles away from the relegation zone. At the moment, Palace sit in 13th place with 28 points – 8 points separate them from the bottom three.

All three points for the South London club would see them potentially narrow the gap between themselves and 12th place Fulham to just 1 point. This is if results go their way, and if they do, the 1 point gap to 12th will be accompanied with an increased gap of 11 points between themselves and the bottom three.

The most recent competitive match to be played between these two clubs took place earlier on in the 2023/24 season at Selhurst Park, when Spurs were able to win 2  – 1 at Palace’s home. A Joel Ward own goal early in the second half put the away side a goal up (53’) before Son Heung-Min doubled his side’s advantage to put Spurs 2 – 0 up. Former Aston Villa forward Jordan Ayew got a consolation goal back in second half stoppage time (90+4’).

Overall, Tottenham and Crystal Palace have played against each other on 64 occasions in total across all competitions over the years. It is Spurs with the most wins with a total of 36 at the time of writing compared to the Eagles’ 13. There have been 15 draws between them in total to date.

In terms of team news ahead of the game, this is what Spurs Boss Ange Postecoglou had to say (via Tottenham Hotspur’s official website):

“Going through from the last game, Richarlison picked up a knee injury so he’s going to be missing two or three weeks, (Ryan Sessegnon) hurt his hamstring and had to have surgery on that. In terms of coming back in, Destiny (Udogie) has a chance for tomorrow, he trained and we’ll have to see how he pulls up. Pedro (Porro) probably another week away.”

Excitement and anticipation are building rapidly ahead of kick-off with Spurs one of the clubs in what looks likely to be a three way battle for a top four finish and what would be subsequent qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
