Spurs v Brighton Preview

Spurs score against Everton 2023/24 Premier League

On Saturday afternoon, Ange Postecoglou’s side can return to the top four with a win against Seagulls in North London.

Tottenham finally return to Premier League action this weekend as they welcome Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton & Hove Albion at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon (3pm Kick-Off). Not only could Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs make it four wins in their last five league matches, they will also climb back into the top four should they get all three points, and will stay there if Aston Villa lose against Manchester United on Sunday.

Spurs have had an excellent 2023/24 season in the Premier League so far, and they currently find themselves in 5th place, with just 2 points separating them from 4th place. The Lilywhites have so far accumulated 44 points from their 23 matches in England’s top flight.

As for Brighton, despite their poor form of late, where they have 2 wins in 10 games, they still find themselves as high flyers in 8th place with a total of 35 points to their name. At the time of writing, the Seagulls sit 9 points adrift of their North London counterparts in the Premier League table.

Back to Spurs, they have picked up some eye-catching and tremendous results in the league throughout the 2023/24 season so far.

The first result of the campaign that caught the eye came in their first home game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Manchester United. In a game that they controlled and were dominant in, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs ran out as 2 – 0 winners thanks to a goal from midfielder Pape Matar Sarr (49’) and an own goal from the Red Devils’ Argentine central defender Lisandro Martinez late on in the second half (83’).

Then, following another comfortable 2 – 0 win, this time away from home against Andoni Iraola’s AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, Spurs would then pick up another eye catching result, this time at Turf Moor against Vincent Kompany’s newly promoted Burnley. The Lilywhites secured an emphatic win, with a Son Heung-Min hat-trick (16’, 63’, 66’) and goals from Cristian Romero (45+2’) and James Maddison (54’) sealing a 5 – 2 win in Lancashire. Lyle Foster (4’) and Josh Brownhill scored for the Clarets that day (90+4’).

Following a 2 – 1 comeback home win against Sheffield United and a creditable 2 – 2 draw at the Emirates Stadium against North London rivals Arsenal, Postecoglou’s Spurs got their next particularly eye catching league result against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in late September (30th).

It was a 2 – 1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against the Reds, with Spurs scoring through Son Heung-Min (36’) and an own goal from Joel Matip (90+6’). Dutch international forward Cody Gakpo was the only visiting player to score a goal that day (45+4’).

Tottenham’s most recent win was a 3 – 2 success against fellow London club Brentford at home on Wednesday 31st January 2024. Neal Maupay gave the Bees the lead before Thomas Frank’s side conceded an equalising goal when Destiny Udogie equalised for Spurs early in the second half (48’). Brennan Johnson then made it 2 – 1 to the Lilywhites when he scored just a minute later (49’).

A goal from Richarlison less than 10 minutes later when the Brazilian found the back of the Bees’ net to make it 3 – 1 (56’). The returning Ivan Toney was able to draw it back to 3 – 2 (67’), but thankfully Spurs could still come away with the win.

As for Brighton, their most recent win came in their most recent Premier League game, which was against M23 Derby rivals Crystal Palace at the AMEX Stadium last weekend. It was an emphatic 4 – 1 win for the Seagulls, who scored thanks to Lewis Dunk (3’), Jack Hinshelwood (33’), Facundo Buonanotte (34’) and Joao Pedro (85’). The only goal for Roy Hodgson’s Eagles came through French forward Jean-Phillipe Mateta late in the second half (71’).

The most recent Premier League meeting between Spurs and Brighton took place on 28th December 2023, when Tottenham Hotspur lost 3 – 2 at the AMEX Stadium on the South Coast. Tottenham’s most recent win against the Seagulls came in the meeting before that on 8th April 2023, when the Lilywhites ran out as 2 – 1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Son Heung-Min (10’) and Harry Kane (79’) scored for Spurs, whilst it was Lewis Dunk who scored for the visitors (34’).

Overall, these two clubs have met on just 38 occasions in all competitions, including their first ever meeting on 24th October 1903 when they drew 2 – 2 at White Hart Lane. It is Spurs with the superior record of 20 wins compared to Brighton’s 10. There have been just 8 draws between them as of the time of writing.

Excitement and anticipation is building rapidly ahead of kick off with Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs looking to continue their push for a UEFA Champions League spot.
