Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham have the opportunity to move into or move level on points with the top four with a win against the Bees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Following the conclusion of the FA Cup action, the 2023/24 Premier League season resumes with some midweek fixtures. For Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, they return to top-flight action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they will come face to face with a Brentford side led by Head Coach Thomas Frank on Wednesday evening. The game is set to kick off at 19:30 in North London.

Ahead of this game, Tottenham currently occupy 5th place in the Premier League, with the Lilywhites having accumulated no less than 40 points from their 21 top-flight matches as of the time of writing. They are only 3 points behind the top four, and if goal difference and Aston Villa’s result against Newcastle is in their favour, Spurs can move into the top four with a win.

Postecoglou’s Spurs are 18 points ahead of their next opponent, Brentford, who currently sits in 14th place with 22 points in their 20 matches. They are a relatively comfortable 6 points above the relegation zone, and if they win, they can potentially extend this gap and climb as high as 12th.

Throughout the 2024 January Transfer Window, the club have made several signings, sealing a deal to sign RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner on loan with an option to buy before subsequently signing Genoa’s Romanian central defender Radu Dragusin for a reported initial fee of €25 million (£21.5 million). Dragusin signed a 6-year contract, which is set to expire in June 2030.

The player leading the way in goals so far this term for Tottenham is Son Heung-Min, who has found the back of the net no less than 12 times in the Premier League. He is level in 3rd place in the top flight’s scoring charts with AFC Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke. The only players to have scored more than Solanke and Son are Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who both have 14 goals each so far.

Spurs have enjoyed a great season, and the fans have enjoyed some simply sensational performances and results. The first of these results that we’ll mention is a 2 – 0 win against Manchester United in their very first home game of the 2023/24 season – it saw a goal from Pape Matar Sarr (49’) and an own goal from Red Devils central defender Lisandro Martinez to secure all three points in what was a statement victory.

Another impressive win came at Turf Moor shortly after, where the away side won 5 – 2 thanks to a hat-trick from Son Heung-Min (16’, 63’, 66’) and goals from Cristian Romero (45+2’) and midfield maestro James Maddison (54’). Lyle Foster (4’) and Josh Brownhill (90+4’) scored the only goal for Vincent Kompany’s Burnley that day.

Like the United one, the Liverpool victory in late September 2023 was very impressive, too, with Ange Postecoglou’s side winning 2 – 1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London. Son Heung-Min gave the home side the lead (36’) before Cody Gakpo restored parity for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds deep into the first-half stoppage time to make it 1 – 1 going into the half-time break (45+4’). The winner came in the second half stoppage time through an own goal from visiting defender Joel Matip (90+6’).

One more standout win from Spurs’ 2023/24 Premier League season so far came against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United, where the Lilywhites were to be emphatic 4 – 1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The goal scorers that day for the home side were Destiny Udogie (26’), Richarlison (38’, 60’) and Son Heung-Min, who scored from the penalty spot (85’). The sole goal for the Magpies came through Joelinton (90+1’).

Moving on to the Brentford game, the most recent fixture in all competitions between the Bees and Spurs came on 13th August 2023, which was Spurs’ opening game of the 2023/24 season. It was a 2 – 2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Cristian Romero (11’) and Emerson Royal (45+4’) scoring Spurs’ goals. The home side scored through a Bryan Mbeumo penalty kick (27’) and a goal from Yoane Wissa just a few minutes before the half-time break (36’).

Including the first-ever fixture on 15th March 1902, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford have played against each other 47 times over the years in all competitions. It is Spurs with a superior record of 24 wins compared to the Bees’ 7. There have been 16 draws between them, including in their most recent encounter.

Following this game, Postecoglou’s Spurs will take a trip to the Blue side of Stanley Park to face Sean Dyche’s Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, 3rd February 2024, in a 12:30 Kick-Off. This match is followed by three consecutive home Premier League games.

The first is against Roberto De Zerbi’s high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 10th February in a 15:00 Kick-Off. This is followed by Wolves on Saturday, 17th February 2024 (15:00 Kick-Off) and then a Crystal Palace side led by their Head Coach, Roy Hodgson, on Saturday, 2nd March 2024, in a 15:00 Kick-Off.
