AC Milan v Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview

Champions League Preview: AC Milan v Tottenham Hotspur – 14th February 2023, 20:00

Antonio Conte will return to his native Italy with his Tottenham team who will be taking on Italian Giants AC Milan in the first leg of their Round of 16 Champions League tie at the San Siro on Tuesday night.

Spurs have had a good Champions League campaign to date. They did the double over French club Marseille whilst also beating German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the group stages, going on to win the group. They finished a point ahead of Frankfurt in second place and 4 ahead of Sporting Clube de Portugal in 3rd.

Their most recent match in Europe was a 2-1 away win against Marseille, where Clement Llenglet and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg scored the goals for Spurs in a great comeback victory.

As for AC Milan, they secured their own passage into the Round of 16 by finishing second in their Champions League group, with Chelsea just above them. They earned victories against Dinamo Zagreb on two occasions and most recently against Austrian side RB Salzburg, who they beat 4-0.

The Rossoneri have won the Champions League/European Cup 7 times (1962/63, 1968/69, 1988/89, 1989/90, 1993/94, 2002/03 and 2006/07). Their most recent triumph in 2007 came against Liverpool, where they beat the Reds 2-1 thanks to a brace from Filippo Inzaghi.

This will be the first time that the two clubs have met since 2011, when Spurs won that two-legged tie 1-0, thanks to a famous win at the San Siro; the goal from Peter Crouch.

Both clubs are challenging for European Football qualification, Spurs in the Premier League and Ac Milan in Serie A (Italian Top Flight) respectively. Incredibly, both Spurs and AC Milan sit in 5th place, with 39 and 41 points respectively.

The latest victory for Stefano Pioli’s Milan was a 1-0 success against Torino, with former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud scoring the goal. As for Spurs, their most recent victory came against Manchester City who they beat 1-0 thanks to a Harry Kane goal, with the striker now the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Tottenham will be looking to go all the way in this season’s Champions League, and whilst they have not yet won the competition, they did make the final in 2019 against Liverpool. They will be looking to avenge this defeat in 2023.

The two clubs have only met four times before this latest meeting. They first played each other on Wednesday 5th April 1972, where Spurs won 2-1 in the UEFA Cup at White Hart Lane, thanks to a brace from Spurs legend Steve Perryman.

The Lilywhites have never lost against their Italian counterparts, and they will look to continue this record on Tuesday night.

The second leg of what is sure to be an enthralling tie will be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and there is no better way to experience the occasion than with one of Eventmasters’ Spurs v AC Milan VIP Hospitality Packages!
