Match Review: Spurs 2 – 0 Brentford (Premier League)

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham move to within only four points away from the top four with a comfortable and deserved 2 – 0 triumph over Frank’s former club Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
On Saturday afternoon, Thomas Frank welcomed his former side, Brentford, to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to face his Spurs team in the heart of North London. The victory boosts the Lilywhites’ hopes of European qualification, with them now only four points adrift of Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace in fourth place in the 2025/26 Premier League table.
Frank’s Tottenham were coming into this game off the back of a competitive and dramatic 2 – 2 draw away from home against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. The Magpies’ Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes gave the hosts the lead late on in the second half (71’), before Cristian Romero scored the equalising goal for his side just a few moments later (78’).
Anthony Gordon then restored Newcastle’s advantage (86’), and it looked like Howe’s side was going to get all three points. But thankfully for the travelling Spurs faithful, Romero was there again in dramatic fashion to score a late equalising goal deep into stoppage time (90+5’) to earn a point for Tottenham.
Now in the game against Brentford, in the end, it was to be a deserved 2 – 0 triumph for Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur side in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
This triumph creates fresh momentum in the clubs’ battle to qualify for European Football once again, whilst also giving them a boost going into their games against Slavia Prague and Nottingham Forest in the UEFA Champions League and Premier League, respectively, this week.

Match Review:
In what was an entertaining and competitive game between these two London-based clubs, Spurs’ first opportunity of note came within the first ten minutes of this contest when Micky van de Ven saw an effort fly over the crossbar after the Dutch defender had received the ball from forward Mohammed Kudus via a cross from a corner kick (7’).
Then, just a few moments later, the Lilywhites’ Brazilian forward Richarlison had his opening chance of the game in the first half, with his shot from close range in the box being blocked well by the Brentford defence. He had also been given the ball by Kudus with a cross (14’).
Xavi Simons then missed an effort on goal (16’), before Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario was forced into making a stunning save in order to deny the Bees’ star striker Igor Thiago, who had unleashed an effort that looked like it would be finding the bottom right corner, but thankfully, Tottenham’s Italian Goalkeeper was there to intervene (24’).
Both of the aforementioned Xavi Simons and Richarlison were then involved in the opening goal of the game. Richarlison found the back of the net to make it 1 -0, thanks to a clinical close-range effort into the bottom left corner after he had successfully met a ball into his feet from Simons midway through the first half to give the hosts what was a deserved lead (25’).
Tottenham then had two changes in very quick succession. Firstly, Cristian Romero saw his header miss the target following a Pedro Porro cross from a corner into the box, before PSG loanee forward Randal Kolo Muani forced a great close-range save from Bees ‘keeper Caoimhín Kelleher, which saw the score remain at 1 – 0 to Tottenham (40’).
Spurs fans would not have to wait much longer for the goal to double their side’s advantage, which came just moments after Kolo Muani’s effort on goal.
Xavi Simons won the ball in midfield near the centre circle, before going on a mazy run past several Brentford players, before finding the bottom left corner in what was one of the best goals of the weekend’s Premier League action just before half time (43’).
Half-time saw Spurs leading comfortably with a two-goal lead, and they were also on track to keep a clean sheet.
It was Spurs who did have the opening chance of the second half through defender Djed Spence, who himself forced another great save from Brentford stopper Kelleher (51’).
Tottenham remained dominant in this game and had two further chances following Spence’s effort on goal. Kudus forced yet another save from the Bees ‘keeper (54’), before goal scorer Richarlison had a long-range effort from just outside of the penalty area well blocked by the Brentford defence (55’).
Thomas Frank’s team came close again to making it 3 – 0, only for Simons to have his strike from just outside of the box saved by Kelleher once again, with the ball initially looking like it was going to find the top right corner (62’).
Then, in the closing stages of the game, there was yet another chance to extend their lead for Spurs, which came through midfielder Pape Matar Sarr. Sarr’s close-range shot was also saved well by Caoimhín Kelleher (83’) with just minutes left (83’).
Tottenham’s final chance of the afternoon came through their Austrian central defender Kevin Danso, whose header from within the box rose too high after he had met a cross into the box from Spanish defender Pedro Porro (90+5’).
The final whistle then went only moments later to confirm what was a thoroughly deserved and dominant 2 – 0 victory for Tottenham Hotspur against Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Thomas Frank’s Post Match Thoughts:
Following this triumph in North London against Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs boss Thomas Frank had the following to say following what was a great performance from his side (via Spurs’ official website):
“Sometimes you work hard on things and sometimes it just suddenly clicks. As I said before, the team has been a little bit out of sync in some stages. Today, a lot more players were on the same page at the same time throughout the game. I think we looked such a threat going forward, created chances, played with pace, tempo, penetration, unpredictable. I like that, it’s everything we like to be, but also being aggressive in the pressure and we still have that clean sheet mentality, we gave four shots away, which is very good against a Brentford team that is very difficult to handle when they play behind with their directness and their set-pieces so, overall, just a complete performance, I would say.
“I think every player needs that extra good performance, so happy for him (Xavi Simons). He’s been working very hard. He’s a top pro, he’s so determined, he wants it so badly in every aspect of his game and it’s just a little bit of adaptation, also that the team is a little bit out of sync. Now, it was more, for example, Kudos after a great start, a little dip because of the little injury, and a lot better today as Xavi is in a good place Kolo (Kolo Muani) is in a better place, Richy (Richarlison). So, everything just coming more and more together, so now we need to build on it.”
Next Up for Spurs:
The next game for Spurs will see them resume their UEFA Champions League campaign against Slavia Prague at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It will be a special occasion, with club legend Son Heung-Min making his return to North London to finally bid farewell to home fans following his move to MLS outfit LAFC during 2025/26 pre-season.
He also led Tottenham to that historic UEFA Europa League win in Bilbao against Manchester United in Bilbao.
This game against Slavia Prague will take place on the evening of Tuesday, 9th December 2025, in what is an 8pm kick-off.
Spurs then travel to Nottingham Forest to face Sean Dyche’s side at the City Ground in their next Premier League game at 2pm on Sunday, 14th December.
Anticipation is building rapidly ahead of the remainder of the 2025/26 Premier League season for Spurs, and they will be hoping that they can realise their ambitions to qualify for European Football for the second season in a row, which they hope will be the Champions League.
