Spurs complete the signing of Bryan Gil & Pierluigi Gollini

Fantastic news for Spurs fans this week as young Spanish star Bryan Gil has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year deal. The total transfer fee has not been disclosed. However, the deal did include the trade of Erik Lamela, who will go and join Sevilla permanently.

It is safe to say that both clubs benefit massively from the trade. Bryan Gil is an incredible prospect. Only 20 years old, Gil made his international debut for Spain in March of this year and is also part of the current Olympic team for Spain. Gil appeared 14 times for Sevilla in the league last year. He’s a winger with intent. Not only is he quick and can strike uncertainty into the heart of opposing defenders, but he can also read the game incredibly well.

Farewell Erik Lamela

The deal means that the 29-year-old Erik Lamela concludes his 8-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur, trading North London for the sunny metropolis of Seville. Lamela joined the club in 2013 from Roma for a fee of £25.7m. The exciting Argentine was set to be a key replacement for Gareth Bale, following the Welshman’s world record transfer to Real Madrid.

In his tenure at Tottenham, Erik Lamela netted 37 times in a total of 255 games and was part of the Spurs squad for their historic Champions League final defeat against Liverpool. Although his long career had been somewhat plagued with regular injuries, Lamela was a key source of entertainment. His performances never lacked passion – a characteristic greatly admired by the Spurs fanbase.

Two of Lamela’s 37 goals will live in the memory of Tottenham fans forever. Erik became the undisputed king of the ‘Rabona’. The first time he scored a Rabona for Spurs was against Asteras in the EUFA Europa League. A simply stunning finish that left the keeper and the fans behind the goal in awe. The second Rabona came only last season against North London rivals Arsenal. If you want to cement your name in Spurs folklore, that’s how you do it.

Following a conversation with an official from Sevilla, Erik told the club website “I really wanted to play in La Liga before retiring. I still have a lot left to give, and the opportunity right now is very exciting for me. Sevilla is a huge club that has won several titles. I’m over the moon. I’m going to give it my all to try and help the team in any way that I can.”

Tottenham Left-back Sergio Reguilon seemed to play an instrumental role in persuading both players to make the move. Lamela cited a conversation with Reguilon, who was quick to sing the praises of his former club. Reguilon and Gil were at Sevilla together as youngsters. Sergio even announced the move on Twitter before Tottenham Hotspur had the chance to!

Spurs Transfer Window is heating up

It seems that Spurs have really kickstarted their transfer window as Gil is only one-half of the transfer news this week!

Tottenham Hotspur have also employed the services of Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on a season-long loan deal. Nuno Espirito Santos is delighted with his first signing as Spurs manager after the 26-year-old impressed by keeping 13 clean sheets for Atalanta last season (in all competitions). The youngster has an option to buy clause in his contract, which is reported to be around the 15m euros mark. Gollini has represented Italy once, but competition is fierce for the Italian number 1 spot with the rise of Euros 2020 hero Gianluigi Donnarumma, now of PSG.

What do these excellent signings tell us? They tell us that the most important and potentially influential change at Tottenham Hotspur this year has been the employment of sporting director Fabio Paratici. Paratici, formerly of Juventus, has a reputation that preceded his move to North London. But the fierce Italian director has proved in his short tenure what sort of role he wants to play at Spurs. Driven by success, his keen eye for talent and an extensive laundry list of connections makes him the perfect appointment to spur on the Spurs this Premier League season. Many critics stated that Tottenham was in a rut under Mourinho – and that a club-wide shift in attitude and ethos needed to take place for Spurs to get back to winning ways. It seems like that shift is currently underway.

Tottenham are on the verge of securing the services of Cristian Romero. It is reported that the exciting Atalanta defender has agreed to a 5-year contract in principal. The I’s need to be dotted and the T’s crossed before it becomes official. Again, the handy work of Paratici has played a significant role in attracting Romero to Tottenham – he signed the young player during his time at Juventus in 2019.

Despite a farewell to Spurs legend Erik Lamela, there is loads to be excited about for Tottenham under the compelling partnership of Nuno and Paratici. How will the new boys fare against the likes of Chelsea, Man City, and Man Utd? It seems like Daniel Levy is committed to achieving a top-four finish after missing out last season.
