Spurs v Crystal Palace Previous Fixture
Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Crystal Palace
Spurs romped to victory at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they brushed Crystal Palace as side in a 4-0 win.
Spurs were four goals to the good in the first half and they coasted to victory, looking like the Spurs we know in the process.
Mauricio Pochettino brought Serge Aurier back into the side as Davinson Sanchez missed out. Summer signing Ndombele also started on the bench.
Son Heung-Min opened the scoring for Spurs after a sumptuous through ball from Toby Alderweireld’s found the South Korean in space on the right hand side, cutting in with some lovely footwork before slotting back across goal in the right hand side of the net.
In the 21st minute, Spurs made it 2-0. Again, Spurs came down that right hand side, targeting Patrick Van Aanholt as Serge Aurier’s cross deflected off the Dutchman and past Guaita in the Crystal Palace goal. Mauricio Pochettino must’ve identified the Palace right hand side as a point of weakness and Spurs exploited it every time they attacked. This was Aurier’s first start in the Premier League since February and he’ll be pleased with his contribution, gaining two assists as he set up the third goal just three minutes later.
Aurier got in down the right hand side and whipped a tremendous ball across the Crystal Palace box and put the ball on a plate for Son Heung-Min who showed great technique to volley home from 12 yards out. It was a well worked goal from Spurs with Crystal Palace’s defence at sixes and sevens.
Spurs fans couldn’t believe what they were seeing as Spurs headed into the break four goals up as Erik Lamela converted three minutes before the break. Son picked the ball up and drove forward before passing out wide to Harry Kane who bent a cross around Sakho as the Argentine stabbed home from close range.
Spurs may have been a little disappointed that they couldn’t capitalise further in the second half against a side who looked like they had no answers. Palace did muster up more shots at goal and more on target than Spurs but they were just clinical in front of goal.
Man of the Match – Son Heung Min
The South Korean was back to his best and was a livewire throughout. A thorn in the side for Crystal Palace, Son broke forward quickly, starting the Spurs counter time after time and got himself on the scoresheet twice. A great day for him.
Manager’s Thoughts
“From the beginning we showed good intensity, focus and then our quality – and that’s why I’m so happy.
“It was a very important victory for us. The feeling was that we were so aggressive, I think we surprised them because when you watched our form in previous games, we never were aggressive like today.
“The plan was to be aggressive, to show intensity from the beginning and all the credit to the players, they made an unbelievable start to the game.
“It was such an important performance for us to start to build our belief and start to win games because in the Premier League, we need to be in a good position.
“Now we need to keep pushing the squad… not to play well or not so well, I’m not talking about performance, I’m talking about the will, the intensity, the togetherness. That is the challenge, to be all together and fighting for big things.”
