Spurs v Sheffield Utd Previous Fixture
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Sheffield United
Sheffield United made it a tough afternoon for Spurs as they drew 1-1 with the newly-promoted side in the Premier League. Spurs took the lead through Son Heung-min who netted his 3rd goal in four days having scored twice in Belgrade. The Blades levelled the scoring through George Baldock as his cross evaded everyone and nestled into the corner of the net. It was another game marred by VAR controversy.
It seems like one step forward, two steps backwards again for Spurs after their crushing 4-0 victory of Red Star Belgrade in midweek. Tottenham Hotspur lacked fight and desire throughout the game Sheffield United outplayed and outbattled them. The result and performance suggest that things still aren’t quite right behind the scenes between the players and Mauricio Pochettino with various rumours reporting that the players whose contracts are up at the end of the season aren’t putting in the hard miles in games and training.
Tottenham Hotspur rarely threatened to get out of second gear and defensive cracks threatened to appear again – especially down Spurs’ right hand side.
Sheffield United thought they had taken the lead in the 58th minute, only for it to be chalked off by VAR officials in Stockley Park. The decision took nearly three minutes to be made. The decision was made after various lines and diagrams were drawn by VAR officials at Stockley Park to adjudge John Lundstram’s big toe to be offside. VAR is quickly becoming the biggest joke in football. If it takes nearly four minutes to make a decision then surely the original decision shouldn’t be contested? Yes he is offside but to take four minutes to make a decision? That’s not clear and obvious.
Sheffield United should have been 2 or 3 up in the first half so the Blades breathed a collective sigh of relief when they equalised in the 78 minute through George Baldock as his cross evaded everyone and went in. The draw means Sheffield United are unbeaten away from home in the Premier League – some feat for a newly-promoted side.
Spurs are now five games without a win the Premier League as their performances continue to disappoint. Spurs will be desperate to return to London after the international break with a clear head as they face London rivals and fellow strugglers West Ham United.
Manager’s Thoughts
“They started better than us, in the first half they were better, and we didn’t match their energy. It was difficult for us to play and create chances.
“In the second half I thought we were better. We were a little unlucky because we got the goal, broke them down and to concede after that was tough to accept because the three points were important for us, but now we have to keep working.
“It’s frustrating because we didn’t keep the result (after being ahead) and, of course, we’re disappointed because we needed the three points but at the end, a draw is a fair result.”
