UEFA Europa League: Spurs vs. Eintracht Frankfurt Preview
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team will be looking to edge ever closer to the Europa League Semi Finals with a first leg victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.
German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, led by their Head Coach Dino Toppmöller, are what stands in the way of Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham Hotspur side, with Spurs meeting the Bundesliga outfit in two legs in the Quarter Finals of the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League. The Lilywhites will host Die Adler (The Eagles) in the first leg of this intriguing and much anticipated tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday evening, with kick-off for this game being at 8pm.
Both clubs come into this game off the back of league wins in the Premier League and the German Bundesliga respectively. Starting with Spurs, they were comfortable 3 – 1 winners against now-relegated Southampton in North London thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson (13’, 42’) and Mathys Tel from the penalty spot (90+6’). Mateus Fernandes was the only goal scorer for the visiting Saints side that day (90’). Tottenham now sits in 14th place with a total of 37 points after having played 31 matches to date, as of the time of writing.
Moving on to Eintracht Frankfurt, Toppmöller’s side were defeated 2 – 0 away from home against Werder Bremen, but this did follow an important 1 – 0 victory at home against VFB Stuttgart at Die Adler’s Deutsche Bank Park, with ex-Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Mario Götze scoring the winning goal in the second half with just twenty minutes of the game remaining plus stoppage time (70’). Eintracht are currently in 3rd place in the German top flight as they fight to be in the UEFA Champions League for next season.
They currently have a grand total of 48 points after playing 28 games – only reigning Champions Bayer Leverkusen and Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich are currently above them at present, as of the time of writing.
Now onto the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League. Starting with Spurs, they won 5, drew 2, and lost just one of their 8 total matches in the League Phase to earn themselves a 4th place finish with as many as 17 points. Only Manchester United, Athletic Club Bilbao, and Lazio finished above them in the standings in the end.
The North London Club got victories against the likes of Qarabag (Azerbaijan, 3 – 0), Ferencvaros (Hungary, 2 – 1), AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands, 1 – 0), Hoffenheim (Germany, 3 – 2), and finally Elfsborg (Sweden, 3 – 0).
Their top eight finish got them into the Round of 16 immediately, and at this stage of the competition, the Lilywhites came up against Dutch Club AZ Alkmaar once again, this time over two legs. In the first leg in Alkmaar, Spurs were beaten 1 – 0 at the AFAS Stadion thanks to an own goal from Spurs’ 19 year old central midfielder Lucas Bergvall early on in the first half (18’).
Then in the second leg in North London at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Postecoglou’s Spurs were able to comfortably beat AZ 3 – 1 thanks to goals from Wilson Odobert (26’ 74’) and James Maddison (48’). Meanwhile, it was Peer Koopmeiners who scored the only goal for AZ Alkmaar that night (63’). This is what secured Tottenham a place in the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Europa League this season.
Moving on to Frankfurt, Die Adler also finished in the top eight of the League Phase in this season’s UEFA Europa League, finishing in 5th place on 16 points, just one place and one point behind Tottenham Hotspur.
The German Club got five wins in all, emerging victorious against the likes of Beşiktaş (Turkey, 3 – 1), FK RFS (Latvia, 1 – 0), Slavia Praha (Czech Republic, 1 – 0), Midtjylland (Denmark, 2 – 1), and Ferencvaros (Hungary, 2 – 0). This saw them qualify immediately for the Round of 16, where they were drawn up against Dutch Giants Ajax, who they faced over two legs.
The first leg took place in Amsterdam at Ajax’s Johan Cruijff Arena, and this was a deserved 2 – 1 victory away from home in the Netherlands, with Hugo Larsson (27’) and Ellyes Skhiri (70’), whilst it was Brian Brobbey who scored the only goal for the hosts within the first ten minutes of the contest (10’).
The second leg at home back in Germany saw Eintracht Frankfurt saw Die Adler secure what was an emphatic 6 – 2 victory on aggregate, with Frankfurt beating Ajax 4 – 1 at the Deutsche Bank Park. This victory came after goals from the likes of Jean-Matteo Bahoya (7’), Mario Götze (25’, 82’), and Hugo Ekitiké (67’). It was Dutch midfielder Kenneth Taylor who scored the only goal for Ajax on that occasion (78’). This saw them qualify for the Quarter Finals, where they now come up against Tottenham Hotspur.
Over the years, Tottenham and Eintracht Frankfurt have met just four times in the entire histories of these respective clubs. Their most recent competitive meeting took place back on Wednesday 12th October 2022 in what was the Group Stages of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League Group Stages, with both clubs in Group B.
It was a game that took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London, with Antonio Conte’s Tottenham winning the game 3 – 2 thanks to goals from Son Heung-Min (19’, 36’) who scored a brace, whilst Harry Kane also scored, with him finding the back of the Eintracht Frankfurt net from the penalty spot (28’). All of these goals came in the first half.
Frankfurt’s goals that night came through Daichi Kamada (14’) and Faride Alidou (87’), with central defender Tuta getting sent off early on in the second half (59’).
Overall, Spurs have the superior record against Eintracht Frankfurt, with 2 wins over Die Adler, with the German outfit having just one victory to their name in this fixture to date, as of the time of writing. They have only drawn against each other once.
