Spurs 2-3 West Ham – League Cup – 25.10.17

Match Report: Spurs vs West Ham

West Ham eliminate Spurs from the League Cup after going 2-0 down at Wembley. Spurs played West Ham off the park in the first half despite not exhibiting a string of their best players. Kane, Lloris, and Aurier were all left out of the squad as Eriksen occupied a spot on the bench. The first goal came within six minutes. Son raced down the left flank before squaring the ball to Sissoko, who effortlessly side-footed it round the Hammers number one.

Spurs vs West Ham: League Cup formations

Spurs doubled up in the 37th minute with an exquisite team goal. The lovely passage of play resulted in Son setting Alli up, whose deflected shot found its way around Adrián. Spurs went into halftime in good spirits and 2-0 up at home. What could go wrong?

West Ham pulled one back in the 54th minute from a set-piece. Spurs cleared their line only as far as Fernandes, whose powerful shot was parried straight into the path of Ayew. The Hammers striker had only an open net in front of him. It really was a poor mistake from Vorm, whose inability to hold on to the ball changed the game from then onwards. West Ham’s second came only five minutes later when a sluggish Spurs defence failed to clear the danger twice before being punished. Alderweireld and Sissoko lost possession twice in critical areas, and the Hammers eventually got the ball to their frontman, Ayew, who was happy to net a brace to level the score. The win was sealed by Ogbanna who rose, unmarked, from a corner in the 69th minute. This really was a game of two halves. As time went by Spurs seemed more and more sluggish in their structure, and practically opened the doors for West Ham to fight back. This was a bad day at the office for Spurs who wave goodbye to a chance at winning the League Cup for the fifth time.
