Tottenham Hotspur vs Red Star Belgrade Match Report

Spurs got back to winning ways last night in the Champions League with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade. Mauricio Pochettino’s men certainly answered their critics and bounced back with a completely dominant performance leaving Spurs fans purring. The Spurs faithful will be hopeful of taking this kind of performance into the upcoming game against Liverpool – arguably the toughest game of the season.

It took Spurs less than ten minutes to break the deadlock through no other than Harry Kane with a sumptuous header. The talismanic forward got up early to guide the in-swinging cross into the corner of the net leaving the goalkeeper without a prayer.

Just 7 minutes later it was 2-0. Erik Lamela got in behind the defence and cut back onto his trusty left foot and found Son at the back post who guided the ball into the top corner. It wasn’t an easy finish for Son Heung-min, with the ball bouncing just before he met it and he did well to get the desired contact onto the ball. An accomplished finish from a fine player.

Son got his third just before the break after Ndombele expertly won the ball upfield and drove forward at the Red Star defence, committing defenders along the way which created the space for Son on the left-hand side of the box who finished with aplomb.

Erik Lamela, who was largely impressive all night went close in the second half with a couple of chances and maybe he should have converted after some good play from Harry Kane. However, his time did come as he scored the fourth and his first of the evening. He criminally found time and space in the box to shift the ball onto his left side before firing the ball home. He had a huge influence on the game so it was nice to see Lamela be awarded with a goal.

Kane wrapped up the scoring for Spurs in the 71st minute with a typically smart finish as he passed the ball past the keeper into the only place that he could’ve scored. Spurs are back to winning ways in some style – we just hope this game is the turning point now so Spurs can kick on.

Man Of The Match – Son Heung-min

The South Korean was a constant thorn in the Red Star defence’s side all night and managed to grab himself two goals. A special mention to Harry Kane and Erik Lamela too, who the latter looked lively and notched a couple of assists and a goal.

Poch’s Thoughts

“I told people two things (before the game) – that it was important to win the game for the three points, of course, but also important for our confidence.

“The best medicine is to win games and to have a good performance and tonight we were fantastic. I feel good – not great, because there is a lot of work to do – but I think we are in a good way.

“We need to stay calm. Look, of course, to celebrate a victory is so important, but we know we need to work hard to improve. It’s always the first little step that is important to cut the negative dynamic and in football, we know that.

“I’m happy for the players and happy for our fans, they were fantastic. They created the atmosphere you need to perform in your best way. I want to congratulate them because we felt the love from the first minute on the pitch.”
