Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Update 7th February 2019

Spurs have confirmed that the Premier League match against Arsenal on the 2nd March has been moved to Wembley, but have not ruled out another match in March as the opening fixture at the new stadium.

In an update released on Thursday, the club reported that works on the safety systems are near completion and that final testing stages of the fire alarm system will happen once that is completed.

The full quote from the official Tottenham Hotspur website is as follows:

We can today report that remedial works on the safety systems in the new stadium are near completion and we shall then move forward to the final stages of testing the fire detection and alarm system and its integration with the other safety systems.
The success of this testing is critical to our ability to obtain a safety certificate and open the stadium.

We can confirm, therefore, that we shall play our Premier League match against Arsenal on Saturday 2 March at 12.30pm at Wembley Stadium. (Tottenham Hotspur Official)

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has also thanked supporters for their continued patience.

“Once again, thank you all for bearing with us and for the great support we have received from so many different quarters. These next few weeks are pivotal.” (Tottenham Hotspur Official)

The club have also announced that they will provide a further update in due course.

It was already anticipated that the Arsenal game would be moved to Wembley due to fears over holding such a potentially hostile fixture so early at Spurs’ New Stadium.

Spurs have already played Arsenal twice this season, both at the Emirates Stadium. In the Premier League fixture, Spurs lost 4-2 however they got revenge a few weeks later in the Carabao Cup as goals from Heung-min Son and Dele Alli gave them victory to send them into the semi-final.

Arsenal have beaten Spurs away from home just once in the last ten Premier League meetings between the two and last season a record Premier League crowd of 83,222 saw Spurs beat Arsenal at Wembley thanks to a Harry Kane goal. This time round there will not be a cap on the attendance at Wembley, like there has been in some of Spurs’ matches this campaign, so there is potential for up to 90,000 fans to witness Spurs v Arsenal at the start of March.

Spurs New Stadium Latest News

With the news that only the Arsenal match has been moved to Wembley, there is speculation that the first game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium may be against Crystal Palace or Brighton, which are Spurs’ next two home matches. However, it could be that the club are holding back on an announcement on these matches because they could be moved if Crystal Palace and Brighton are involved in the latter stages of the FA Cup.

Spurs v Crystal Palace is currently scheduled for Sunday 17th March, however if Crystal Palace progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals by beating Doncaster next week, then the fixture will be moved because the weekend of 16th and 17th March is when the FA Cup quarter final fixtures will take place.

Similarly, if Brighton progress to the FA Cup semi-final, then the Spurs v Brighton fixture currently scheduled for Saturday 6th April will also be moved because the FA Cup semi-finals take place that weekend. Brighton host Derby County at home in the fifth round after beating West Bromwich Albion in a replay on Wednesday.

It is perhaps for this reason that Spurs have not made a full announcement about the home matches after Arsenal, as a date for those games is still not certain. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will need to host two test events to prove that the ongoing issues with security systems have been resolved in order to get the necessary safety certificates from Haringey Council.
