Spurs vs Southampton Previous Fixture
Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Southampton
Spurs got back to winning ways last weekend in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Southampton. The win sees Spurs registering their first win in three and up to 5th in the table.
Southampton started the game well, forcing an early save from Hugo Lloris has kept the score level but it was Spurs who took the lead from record summer signing Tanguy Ndombele in the 24th minute. The ball came out to Son Heung-Min on the left hand side who took on his man, looked to get his shot away but instead opted to slide Ndombele in who slotted home from inside the area. It may have taken a little deflection on the way through which threw the keeper off the direction of the shot but it still found the back of the net and that’s all that matters.
A torrid ten minutes then ensued for Tottenham Hotspur at the new stadium. Serge Aurier picked up a second yellow card in the 31st minute after getting the wrong side of Ryan Bertrand down the Spurs right hand side who he then pulled back – a clear yellow and Aurier received his marching orders by the referee. However, the talking point around the sending off wasn’t the dismissal, it was the fact that the ball seemed to go out of play before the foul was given and Harry Winks was furious with the officials as he felt the ball went out of play.
It got even worse just seven minutes later for Spurs as Southampton drew level through a calamitous error by Hugo Lloris. The ball was played into him under no real pressure and he dwelled on the ball, inviting Danny Ings to close him down and the Frenchman tried to Cruyff turn himself out of trouble whilst getting the ball stuck under his feet in the process. All Ings had to do was tap home into an empty net and is likely to never score an easier goal in the top flight again. It’s a moment that Lloris will be quick to forget.
Southampton’s joy was short lived. Who else to call upon when you need a call than Harry Kane? Son got in down the right hand side who played in Eriksen who then squared it to Kane, who still had a lot to do as he cut inside and shot back across the goalkeeper into the bottom left corner. Spurs went in at half-time 2-1 up.
And that’s the way it stayed. Hugo Lloris certainly made up for his first half mistake by making two wonderful saves in the second half to keep Spurs in front and Southampton at bay. Without those saves, it may have been a very different game.
Man Of The Match – Tanguy Ndombele
The record signing reclaimed possession well in the middle of the park and drove forward with great directness. He even got himself on the scoresheet. He’s really starting to pay back his transfer fee now.
Manager’s Thoughts
“The spirit – if we need to praise something, it’s the spirit. I’m proud and so happy for my players and for my squad, the staff and the fans. It’s an important victory for us to recover our best feelings.
“We started well and scored but the sending off changed the atmosphere and the emotions. We conceded but it was an unbelievable response from the team, scoring the goal with 10 men and then fighting all together in the second half.
“That’s what we needed. That’s the way to play and with the quality we have, we are going to succeed. We keep going, working together. We have massive belief, so keep working hard, stay calm in our assessment and we have an unbelievable squad, unbelievable players, we are going to be successful, for sure.”
