The North London Derby is one of the most high profile and long standing rivalries in English Football, and it is set to be renewed when Tottenham take on the Gunners this weekend at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The latest chapter in the illustrious history of the iconic North London Derby is set to be written this weekend when Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs take on fierce rivals Arsenal, led by Mikel Arteta, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 15th September 2024. This highly anticipated match will kick-off at 14:00.

It is early on in the season, and Spurs did have that standout 4 – 0 home victory against Sean Dyche’s Everton. It was a ruthless display from the Lilywhites, who found the back of the net through goals from Yves Bissouma (14’), Son Heung-Min (25’, 77’), and Cristian Romero (71’). They will be hoping to be just as ruthless against the Gunners on Sunday afternoon.

For Arsenal, their standout result of the season as of the time of writing came against Aston Villa, who they beat 2 – 0 at Villa Park with Leandro Trossard (67’) and Thomas Partey (77’) both on target for the Gunners that day. This stands out with their West Midlands opponents one of the clubs that finished in the top four with the Gunners last season.

Three points for Tottenham could take them as high as third place in the 2024/25 Premier League table should results elsewhere also go their way. As for Arsenal, they could climb to the summit of the league with all three points, and if Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton all fail to win this weekend.

The first ever North London Derby took place all the way back on 9th November 1896 at the Manor Ground, which was the predecessor to Highbury, where they would move to in 1913. It was a narrow 2 – 1 win for the Gunners that day.

The next year, on 25th February 1897, Spurs and Arsenal drew 2 – 2 in front of a 2,000 capacity crowd at Northumberland Park. Robert Clements and James Devlin scored for Tottenham that day. Northumberland Park was the home of the club until they eventually moved to White Hart Lane two years later in 1899.

Spurs’ first North London Derby victory came in their next league encounter, which took place on 25th December 1897 at the Manor Ground. It was a 3 – 2 victory for the Lilywhites, with William Joyce (x2) and Robert Stormont being the goal scorers for the visitors on that day.

Over the years, there have been a number of particularly memorable matches between these two teams. One of which was a particularly positive game for Spurs, which was when they beat the Gunners 5 – 1 in the second leg of their 2007/08 League Cup Semi Final at White Hart Lane.

A 35,979-strong crowd witnessed a simply stunning performance from the hosts, who managed to score through goals from Jermaine Jenas (3’), Robbie Keane (48’), Aaron Lennon (60’), and Steed Malbranque (90+4’). There was also an own goal from Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner on that day as well (27’).

It was a 6 – 2 win on aggregate for Spurs, who went on to beat another London rival in the form of Chelsea in the Final, beating the Blues 2 – 1 after extra time, with a Dimitar Berbatov penalty kick (70’) and a goal from Jonathan Woodgate (94’) sealing their victory.

After drawing 2 – 2 at the Emirates earlier in the 2023/24 season, Spurs were narrowly defeated 3 – 2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what was their most recent competitive meeting in all competitions. Cristian Romero (64’) and Son Heung-Min (87’) were both the goal scorers for the home side.

Tottenham’s most recent victory against Arsenal came in the Premier League on 12th May 2022 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was an emphatic 3 – 0 victory for the Lilywhites on the day, with their goals coming courtesy of Harry Kane (22’ – Penalty, 37’) and Son Heung-Min (47’).

All eyes will be on North London on Sunday 15th September 2024, with the kick-off for the first North London Derby of the 2024/25 season between Spurs and Arsenal to kick-off at 14:00 that afternoon.
