Spurs v Manchester City Preview

Spurs can keep their UEFA Champions League Qualification hopes alive if Ange Postecoglou’s side beat Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Tuesday.

The race for fourth spot in the Premier League and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League has gone down to the wire. Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs are competing with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa for fourth place and a spot in European club football’s premier cup competitions for next term, with Manchester City, led by Pep Guardiola, are their next opponents on Tuesday night in what is a 20:00 kick-off in the evening.

As it stands, Spurs find themselves in fifth place ahead of kick-off against City, having accumulated a total of 63 points from their 36 matches to date. They do have a game in hand, which is tonight’s match against City, and all three points would see them come within just 2 points of the top four with only one game remaining.

However, Tottenham does know that if they lose or draw with Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens in North London, Villa will confirm their place in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, and it would mean that Postecoglou and his team would have to settle for the UEFA Europa League.

They would then be able to secure 5th spot with a draw or win on the final day of the season against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

The Lilywhites’ most recent game in the Premier League saw them go toe to toe with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 11th May. In the end, it was a comfortable and deserved 2 – 1 win for the hosts. The visiting Clarets did take the lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen early on in the first half (25’) before Pedro Porro equalised with just over half an hour gone (32’).

The winning goal then came courtesy of a fine strike on goal from Dutch defender Micky van de Ven in the dying embers of the second half to take an all important three points in the race for the top four (82’).

Following Villa’s entertaining 3 – 3 draw at home against Liverpool, Spurs remain in 5th place with 63 points overall but are now 5 points adrift of the top four following their win.

As for Manchester City, they came up against Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League on 11th May. It ended up being an emphatic and ruthless 4 – 0 win for Guardiola’s Cityzens on the road at their West London counterparts. The title challengers scored through Josko Gvardiol (13’, 71’), Phil Foden (59’), and a Julian Alvarez penalty (90+6’).

The Cityzens remained in second place despite this emphatic victory after title rivals Arsenal were able to beat Manchester United 1 – 0 at Old Trafford a day later. City now have 85 points and are one adrift of Mikel Arteta’s Gunners with a game in hand, and two games remaining overall, including the one against Spurs on Tuesday.

In what could be some encouragement for Spurs fans, Manchester City have not won any games in the Premier League away to Tottenham since the North London club moved into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

City’s most recent win away against Tottenham took place at Wembley Stadium on 29th October 2018, which Pep Guardiola’s side won 1 – 0 thanks to a goal from Riyad Mahrez very early on in this particular contest (6’).

The most recent victory for Tottenham against Manchester City in all competitions took place on 5th February 2023 in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was a 1 – 0 win for the Lilywhites, who found their winning goal thanks to Harry Kane – the club’s all-time leading goal scorer. Kane got his goal with barely less than twenty minutes gone in this contest (15’).

Spurs and City’s last encounter in the Premier League did produce a highly entertaining 3 – 3 draw at the Etihad Stadium earlier on in the season on 3rd December 2023. Son gave Spurs the early lead (6’) before scoring an own goal a few minutes later (9’). Phil Foden then gave City the lead (31’) before Argentine attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso equalised, restoring parity with just over twenty minutes to go in the contest (69’).

Jack Grealish then gave City the lead once more (81’), only for Dejan Kulusevski to score a dramatic, late equaliser for Ange Postecoglou’s side (90’).

Overall, Spurs and Manchester City have gone toe to toe a total of 170 times in all competitions as of the time of writing. It is City with the very marginally superior record of 67 wins in this fixture compared to Tottenham’s 66 so far. There have been 37 draws between them so far.

This will be a very crucial game for both Spurs and Manchester City on Tuesday night as they seek UEFA Champions League football and the Premier League title respectively.

Excitement and anticipation are building ahead of this game between Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday 14th May 2024 in a 20:00 kick-off.
