Spurs v Burnley Match Preview

Spurs 2324

Three points for Ange Postecolgou’s Tottenham against Burnley is crucial as the Lilywhites continue to challenge for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

There are only three games left in the 2023/24 Premier League season for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side, and one of them is set to be played on the afternoon of Saturday 11th May 2024 when the North London outfit takes on relegation threatened Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The game is set to kick-off at 15:00.

As it stands, Tottenham are currently sat 5th in the Premier League table after accumulating a total of 60 points from their 35 games to date in the English top flight this season. They do have a game in hand on top four rivals Aston Villa, who currently have a 7 point lead on the Lilywhites at the moment.

If Spurs do manage to get all three points with a win against Vincent Kompany’s Clarets side, they will come with four points of Unai Emery’s Villa. This will be confirmed if the Villans lose their game at home to Liverpool on Monday.

A win for Spurs against Burnley will be crucial in keeping their UEFA Champions League Qualification hopes alive, because if the Lilywhites drop points in any of their three remaining Premier League games, Aston Villa will officially confirm fourth place.

There is of course a chance for Spurs to leapfrog Villa if they can put a run together of three wins out of three, and if their West Midlands rivals dropped any points in that time then Tottenham will secure fourth spot and a spot in the highly coveted UEFA Champions League for next season.

Spurs’ most recent Premier League game saw them beaten 4 – 2 by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield. Richarlison (72’) and Son Heung-Min (77’) were the two goal scorers for Postecoglou’s side that day.

Moving on to Tottenham’s opponents Burnley, they are currently embroiled in a tight and tense relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League table. Kompany’s Clarets are currently in 19th place with 24 points after 36 matches. They have two games to go, including this one in North London, and are currently 5 adrift of safety as it stands.

If Burnley gets all three points, their win would see them come within two points of safety should Luton lose their game against West Ham, and Nottingham Forest would have to lose their game at the City Ground against Chelsea too for this to happen.

The most recent top flight league game to be played by the Clarets was against Newcastle United at Turf Moor, where they were heavily defeated 4 – 1 in Lancashire. Callum Wilson (19’), Sean Longstaff (35’), Bruno Guimaraes (40’), and Alexander Isak (55’) all found the back of the net for Eddie Howe’s Magpies before central defender Dara O’Shea got on the scoresheet for hosts Burnley in what was very much a consolation goal (86’).

Overall, Spurs and Burnley have played against each other competitively on a total of 124 occasions in all competitions, including their first-ever encounter on 13th January 1906 in the first round of that season’s FA Cup at White Hart Lane. Tottenham won it 2 – 0 thanks to goals from Peter Kyle and Vivian Woodward.

It is Tottenham with a superior number of 54 wins in this fixture to date compared to 42 in total for their Lancashire counterparts Burnley. To date, there have so far been just 28 draws between these two clubs.

The most recent match between these two teams took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier on in the 2023/24 season. The game in question took place on 5th January 2024 in an FA Cup Third Round tie, and a goal late on in the second half from Pedro Porro was enough to secure passage into round four.

Spurs were also victorious in their most recent Premier League fixture against Burnley, in what was an emphatic 5 – 2 triumph at Turf Moor on Saturday 2nd September 2023. A Son Heung-Min hat-trick (16’, 63’, 66’) and goals from Cristian Romero (45+2’) and James Maddison (54’) sealed a convincing win that day. Lyle Foster (4’) and Josh Brownhill (90+4’) both scored for the Clarets that day.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to repeat this result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 11th May 2024 as they look to continue their hunt for a spot in the Premier League’s top four and in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Excitement and anticipation are building rapidly ahead of what is set to be a crucial Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 11th May 2024 in a 15:00 kick-off.
