Second half resurgence sees Spurs gain all three points

Saturday 10th August 2019 Tottenham 3-1 Aston Villa

spurs 3-1 villa review

An early John McGinn goal threatened to ruin the party for Tottenham Hotspur as the Scotsman opened the scoring for

in the 9th minute.

Tottenham dominated the game from start to finish, having 70% of the possession. Spurs threatened from the get-go, as Moura disposed El-Mohamady in the opening seconds and shot just over. Spurs continued to apply the pressure but a long punt downfield from Tyrone Mings wasn’t dealt with by Sanchez and McGinn ran clear and slotted past Lloris. The new stadium was stunned into silence as newly promoted Aston Villa took the lead against the run of play.

Spurs couldn’t find a breakthrough in the final third and went in at half time 1-0 down.

The second half started a little livelier with Spurs going close on numerous occasions but a resilient Aston Villa held their shape well and thwarted any true goal threat. This was until the introduction of Christian Eriksen. Considering his future has been up in the air, nothing phased him as he came on a changed the game. Spurs, with a lot more width took the game by the scruff of the neck as Eriksen unlocked the Villa back line.

In the 73rd minute, the ball broke to Ndombele on the edge of the area and he smashed it into the bottom right corner. Ndombele looked a little nervous in the game but the goal was taken well. Once Spurs scored, it was one-way traffic.

Jack Grealish dallied on the ball which saw Lamela dispossess him, shoot and deflect into the path of Harry Kane – the rest was history. 2-1 Spurs. Four minutes later it was 3-1. A lovely curling finish on the edge of the area from Kane sealed the three points for Spurs.

Eriksen changed the game

Spurs looked short of imagination as they attempted to unlock the Villa fans in the first half. Eriksen came on not long into the second half which saw players such as Sissoko being pushed out wide. This gave Eriksen the freedom to do what he does best. Aston Villa didn’t know how to cope with his creativity. We can’t wait to see him and Lo Celso in the same side.

Man of the Match

Harry Kane opened his account on the opening day of the season having scored twice. He’s come into criticism over recent years having started previous seasons quite slowly so he certainly answered the critics by scoring two. He looked busy and sharp with his well-deserved rest of the summer looks to have paid dividends.

Poch’s Thoughts

Up next

Spurs travel to table-topping Manchester City next Saturday which is set to be an extremely tough game. Spurs will need to be organised and look to counter City who put 5 past West Ham at the weekend. We’d certainly take a draw but we’re hoping for a win.
