A couple of months ago, Tottenham Hotspur expressed initial interest in this phenomenal young Dutch centre-back after a wonderful performance in an international friendly for the Netherlands. As there has been no progress in the contract talks between experienced CB Toby Alderweireld and the club, it is assumed that Toby will be departing North London this summer.
Further developments have broken out this week regarding the 18-year-old Dutch prodigy. A report published in the Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, claims that de Ligt is set to leave Ajax once the summer transfer window goes live.

De Ligt will be in high demand, he is a notable talent not just in the Netherlands, but also in Europe. As such, Spurs are not the only club linked with the young player: Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also expressed significant interest.
Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur seem to have a healthy relationship with transfers, and particularly with centre-backs. Like de Ligt, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both came through the Ajax academy. Spurs newbie Davinson Sanchez made the move from Ajax last summer.
Mauricio Pochettino has a knack for finding, and developing, young players with talent and potential. Alderweireld and Vertonghen forged a partnership which at one time was impenetrable. The Ajax link between Sanchez and de Ligt would be an excellent foundation to forge another fortress at the back of the Spurs defence. Both players are young, talented and pursue glory. That can only be a recipe for success if Spurs were to pluck this prodigy from the Ajax ranks.
A report by Mundo Deportivo argues that Spurs are prepared to ‘break their transfer record’ to get their hands on Matthijs De Ligt.
The primary reason de Ligt is said to have given for his decision to depart is an Ajax lack of trophies – Ajax have now gone four years without winning an Eredivisie title.

Although Spurs have missed out on silverware again during this campaign, there is a sense that the Lilywhites will be advancing their position and breaking the top three – with that ambition, as well as a move to the new stadium, it seems that silverware is just around the corner.
Ajax have placed a pretty price tag on the young lad’s head – £53 million pounds to purchase his services. It is reported that Spurs have registered their interest – event at that price. The 18-year-old has registered over 50 appearances for Ajax and has found his way into the Dutch national starting XI. With his age and his potential, as well as his links to Sanchez, he will most certainly fit into the Pochettino philosophy.
