Spurs Trio in the 2018 PFA Team of the Year

As this exhilarating Premier League campaign draws to a close, it is that time of year when players and professionals hand-pick the top performers from each team and create a star-studded starting XI.

Three Spurs players have been rewarded for their efforts, one from each section of the pitch: Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, and of course Harry Kane.

Jan Vertonghen has been ever reliable for Tottenham Hotspur this season and has appeared in 33 out of the 34 games so far. The team rely on Jan not just as the rock of their defence but also as a character, and a motivator, on the training ground. Mauricio Pochettino, a former centre-back himself, holds the Belgian in very high regard. Back in February, Pochettino described him by saying

“He looks like a 20-year-old because it is easy for him to run – he is like my new dog! Physicality is his talent. It is genetic. He is an athlete and he could play until he is 40 because his physical condition comes very naturally to him”.

This campaign, Christian Eriksen has netted 10 goals in the Premier League, which is a record best for the Danish midfielder. Additionally, he has 9 assists to his name. Although Eriksen is only just acclaiming media recognition for his football genius, his talents as a playmaker have long been known – and revered – by the entire Tottenham Hotspur fan base. Pochettino has dubbed Christian Eriksen a ‘special one’ before, and his performances live up to the title. He is a game changer when the team look deflated; the team and the fans can rely on Eriksen to provide the spark that reinvigorates the Spurs attacking mentality when it is flagging.

Kane, Eriksen and Vertonghen all make PFA Team of the Year

What can be said that hasn’t been said about Harry Kane already? Even Mauricio Pochettino admitted towards the end of 2017 that he has run out of ways to praise this magnificent and clinical forward. He has scored 26 goals in this Premier League campaign so far. This season saw him break the record for most goals in a calendar year. This is his fourth season in a row in which the striker has netted more than 20 goals. Harry Kane is currently chasing his third consecutive golden boot award. It really does come as no surprise that he is among the selected few. Check out the entire PFA Team of the Year here:

I don’t think its possible to argue that any of those players selected from the midfield shouldn’t have been named in this year’s team, they have all ben phenomenal. However, on a club level, Heung-Min Son deserves recognition and praise for his performances this season. He’s netted 17 times in all competitions this season and has beaten opposition players with strength, skill, and technical ability. Not to mention, his attitude and general mood in post-match interviews has been a breath of fresh air. Let’s hope the Son keeps on shining in North London!
