Norwich City 0-5 Spurs: Champions League Return Sealed

Tottenham Hotspur will return to Champions League action in the 2022/23 season after sealing a comfortable 5-0 win over already-relegated Norwich City.

The feeling of Champions League victory was sweetened by the news that Heung-Min Son became joint winner of the Premier League Golden Boot.

Heung-Min Son’s brace at Carrow Road took his total goal scoring tally for the 21/22 Premier League season to 23 – meaning he would share the award with Liverpool’s Mo Salah, who also scored 23 goals. Son also made history by becoming the first Asian player to claim the honour.

Spurs Seal Top-Four Spot in Style

Spurs stepped out at Carrow Road knowing that they only needed a draw to qualify for Europe’s elite club football competition, but that didn’t stop the Lilywhites.

Tottenham Hotspur took the lead in the 16th minute after Dejan Kulusevski tapped in a close-range finish from a ball set-up by Rodrigo Bentancur. Bentancur then set up the second, pouncing on a pass out from Norwich keeper Tim Krul to deliver a cross to England talisman Harry Kane, who headered it home.

Spurs were 2-0 up at the break and continued to run the Canaries ragged after half-time. Kulusevski (64′) made it 3-0 after netting an impressive left-footed pass from Kane, and then it was Son’s time to shine.

Six minutes after Kulusevski’s goal, Son (70′) drilled a low finish past Krul to make it 4-0 and then scored a stunning strike from 20-yards out five minutes later to make it 5-0.

Spurs never gave Norwich a chance to get a foothold in the match and almost went ahead 8 minutes into the game. Norwich had 0 shots on target and maintained 40.4% possession of play, compared to Tottenham, with 13 shots on target and 59.6% possession.

Although Salah’s goal at Anfield saw Son become the joint winner of the Golden Boot, it was back-to-back awards for the club and the South Korean described it as a “dream come true”. There were several other positive takeaways from this season, including a return to the Champions League!

After the match, Golden Boot winner Son Heung-Min said:

“This season was a great lesson. Next season we can look forward to the Champions League. Everyone deserves to be there.

“Conte gives us so many different things. Before he came here, nobody believed we’d reach the Champions League.”

After picking up all three points against the Canaries, Spurs finished fourth in the 21/22 Premier League campaign on 71 points, with 22 wins, 69 goals and 16 clean sheets.

Antonio Conte: The Manager’s Thoughts:

Antonio Conte described Sunday’s victory as the “perfect day”, adding that guiding Tottenham back into the Champions League is one of the best achievements of his career.

Conte joined Spurs in November 2021, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo. At the time, Spurs had just suffered a crushing defeat to Manchester United and were eighth in the EPL.

Although his reign has not been without issues, with the reverse fixture against Wolves spelling the first time Conte lost three consecutive games since managing Atalanta in 2009, his management has led to a significant uptick in results.

Conte guided Tottenham Hotspur to six wins, draws, and just one loss in his first ten matches in charge across all competitions. They also won five of their last seven Premier League matches and scored 18 goals, three of which were netted in the biggest Derby victory against Arsenal since 1983.

Back in March, when Spurs trailed Arsenal by six points with one game less in hand, it seemed like a fourth-place finish was out of reach, but Tottenham seized the momentum in the North London Derby.

And while Conte revealed that taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo was among the biggest challenges he has faced in football, he has been the architect of Spurs’ renaissance this season and constantly praised his player’s commitment to improving.

In an interview with BBC Sport, he said:

“Joining Spurs was maybe the biggest challenge in my career.

“I’m really satisfied. I want to thank my staff and my players. We were able to achieve this because everyone gave everything.”

Although the Italian has refused to commit to Tottenham Hotspur past the end of the season, a return to the Champions League could change his mind, and he admitted he has a lot of love for the club and the coaching team.

In a post-match interview, Conte said, “I always said at the end of the season we’ll speak to the club and find the best solution for me and the club.”

Spurs Transfer Market Rumours

According to the Daily Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur will offer Antonio Conte six signings in a bid to make the Italian extend his contract with the club.

So far, Tottenham Hotspur has been linked to a move for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster to support current captain and first-choice keeper Hugo Lloris. They’re also reportedly keen to sign West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone ahead of his expiring contract next month.

There are also rumours of a triple swoop on Everton, with Antonio Conte reportedly tracking Richarlison, Ben Godfrey and Anthony Gordon.

Harry Kane has confirmed that he will be staying with Tottenham Hotspur this summer, following the transfer drama with Manchester City. However, Ajax is reportedly resurrecting their interest in Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn after admitting he was open to leaving Spurs.
