Spurs Ladies lose out to League leaders

The fierce Doncaster Belles increase their undefeated run in the WSL2 with a comfortable 3-0 over the Spurs Ladies. It was a match of missed chances for Tottenham Hotspur who hadn’t played a competitive game for over a month.

After an extended hiatus away from the pitch, it was actually the Spurs Ladies who started the game with more energy and more focus to score. Key player Bianca Baptiste demonstrated her silky skills early on and forced Doncaster’s Bradley-Aukland to head the ball within an inch of her own goal post.  The Belles began to find their stride shortly after and registered their first shot within 8 minutes, however, Rayner fired wide.

The match was end-to-end within the first half-an-hour of the game. Coral-Jade Haines and Baptise linked up nicely to deliver a ball for Wendy Martin which was punched away. Spurs keeper Chloe Morgan denied a chip shot from Kirsty Hanson. Spurs superstar Sarah Wiltshire then joined the action by volleying over the crossbar from 20 yards out. Spurs were creating the chances and looked hungry in front of goal, but seemed to have just lacked that clinical precision.

Doncaster Belles took the lead in the 34th minute. Hanson was picked out in the box by Rayner, and she had absolutely no trouble firing it into the far corner. They had a chance to double up five minutes later, but Leandra Little skied the ball from a header from close range. It only took 8 minutes of gameplay for the Belles to double their lead in the second half. Walton floated a delightful corner out to Rayner who waiting on the edge of the area. With aplomb, she guided the ball into the net for the second.

That second goal really opened up the game for the Belles who started to take firm control of the tempo from then onwards. Emily Simpkins had an opportunity to add a third but shot wide in the 72nd minute. The third goal came in the 82nd minute at the boots of Sigsworth. With a rocked from 20 yards out, she put Spurs, and the game, to bed.
