Spurs International Round-Up – Eriksen Scores Twice

Here are the details of the Spurs players that featured for their International sides over the weekend.

Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Dembele both featured in Belgium’s comfortable 4-0  win over Scotland at Hampden Park on Friday. Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard scored once and Michy Batshuayi grabbed a brace for the Red Devils. Toby Alderweireld was an unused substitute and is likely to start for Belgium in their first Nations League game against Iceland on Tuesday.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, on loan at Swansea City, was an unused substitute against Brazil as the United States were beaten by goals from Roberto Firmino and Neymar. Next up for them is a friendly against Mexico on Wednesday.

Davinson Sanchez started as Colombia beat Venezuela 2-1 thanks to a last minute winner from Yimmi Chara. Radamel Falcao had equalised earlier in the second half for Colombia before being substituted for Rangers debutant Alfredo Morelos. They too will next play on Wednesday in a friendly against an Argentina side without Lionel Messi.

Heung-min Son captained South Korea to a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in Seoul on Friday. Son did however hit the post with a penalty, with teammate Lee Jae-sung converting the rebound to put the hosts ahead before halftime.

Alli Withdraws from England Squad

Harry Kane was presented with the World Cup Golden Boot before England’s Nations League game with Spain.

Kane, Kieran Trippier and Dele Alli played all 90 minutes, whereas Danny Rose and Eric Dier came on as substitutes as England lost 2-1 to a technically superior Spain side. England were denied a late equaliser by the referee when Danny Welbeck bundled home despite little obstruction from him or any England player in the build up to the goal.

On Monday 10th September Dele Alli withdrew from the squad with a minor muscle injury, which is not expected to keep him out for long. Gareth Southgate had already hinted that he is set to experiment for the friendly with Switzerland on Tuesday anyway, meaning that Kane and Trippier will likely get a rest before Spurs’ Premier League game with Liverpool on Saturday, saying;

We have to give the other players a start. It’s important for their development and physically there are a lot of players who haven’t had a game of football yet this season. They need, having come away for 10 days, football. So I think, on this occasion, that’s the approach we have to take. (Guardian)

Ben Davies and Christian Eriksen went head-to-head on Sunday as Denmark beat Wales by two goals to nil. Eriksen, who was sorely missed by Denmark in their friendly loss to Slovakia on Wednesday, scored both goals for Denmark as they ended up comfortable winners in their Nations League encounter.

Serge Aurier was Ivory Coast captain as they narrowly beat Rwanda 2-1 in an AFCON 2019 qualifier. Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia opened the scoring for the Ivory Coast and former Leeds and Bournemouth man Max Gradel doubled their lead. Despite being underdogs, Rwanda fought back and were unlucky not to get something out of the game.

Hugo Lloris did not play for France in their 2-1 Nations League win over the Netherlands in Paris, but played a central role in the World Cup celebrations that followed.

It remains to be seen whether Lloris will be in action at the weekend against Liverpool, but the club are hoping that he will be available for Spurs first Champions League Group Stage game this season against Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday 18th September.
