Spurs 4 – 1 West Ham Match Review

Spurs beat West Ham October 2024

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team claim the bragging rights following an emphatic derby day victory against West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon, Spurs welcomed local rivals West Ham United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their latest Premier League encounter in North London. It was not just three points that were at stake here – bragging rights for the fans were also there to claim with victory for either the Lilywhites or the Hammers.

In the end, it was a ruthless display from Ange Postecoglou’s side, who were able to emerge as emphatic 4 – 1 winners against Julen Lopetegui’s team. Tottenham found the back of the net on that day through Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, and Son Heung-Min, as well as an own goal from Hammers Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

As a result of collecting these vital three points on home soil, Tottenham have climbed up to 7th place in the 2024/25 Premier League table, with a total of 13 points to their name after 8 matches. Just a point now stands between them and the top six, whilst fourth place is only 4 points ahead of the North London outfit.

Match Highlights (via Sky Sports Premier League):

Match Review:

Once the match had got underway, it was hosts Tottenham who had the opening opportunity of the contest through the in-form Brennan Johnson, but the former Nottingham Forest forward saw his effort on goal fly wide of the left post with just over five minutes having gone (6’).

The Hammers then had a chance through Mohammed Kudus who forced a great save from Guglielmo Vicario with little more than ten minutes having elapsed. Emerson saw his own shot on goal fly wide of the left post (11’).

The hosts then had two opportunities in quick succession. The first one came from Dejan Kulusevski who had a powerful shot on goal blocked (14’). Son Heung-Min then had a chance to score as well, but his effort went narrowly wide (16’).

Spurs did then fall behind a couple of minutes later when the aforementioned Kudus scored when his powerful effort on goal found the top left corner that gave Vicario absolutely no chance of making the save (19’).

Brennan Johnson came close to getting his team back level immediately, but the Wales international was unable to find the target with his header on goal after meeting a delightful cross into the box from James Maddison (23’).

With just over half an hour gone, Pedro Porro had an opportunity for Spurs with the Spanish full back forcing a save from Areola to keep the Hammers ahead (34’).

Tottenham did then finally get the equalising goal to restore parity when Dejan Kulusevski found the bottom right corner after receiving a great pass into his feet from Maddison (36’). Spurs were now looking to take the lead for the first time in this match.

The two teams did end up going into the half time break level on terms at 1 – 1 following an entertaining first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

To the delight of Spurs fans in the stadium and across the world, it did not take long for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team to take the lead. Yves Bissouma was the goal scorer to give the hosts the lead by firing his effort into the bottom left corner (52’).

The home side’s lead was promptly extended to two goals just a few minutes later when Alphonse Areola scored an own goal to make it 3 – 1 to Tottenham that day (55’).

Son, who had come close to scoring before Areola’s own goal, the South Korean international finally got his goal, which was his first since returning from injury. The forward scored when he found the bottom left corner emphatically after he was found by an exceptional pass from Pape Matar Sarr (60’). It was now 4 – 1 to Tottenham with the game out of sight for West Ham.

Son Heung-Min then came close to getting his brace, with a shot looking destined to find the back of the net to make it 5 – 1, only for the ball to hit the post (61’). Then, goal scorer Mohamed Kudus had a shot on goal blocked (62’).

Brennan Johnson then came close with an effort of his own with just over twenty minutes of the game remaining, but Alphonse Areola was able to make the save (67’).

There were chances for both sides to add further goals to the scoreline, but neither team managed it in the end. There was one more particularly significant moment in the game though when goal scorer Mohamed Kudus was shown a straight red card and was sent off to reduce the Hammers to ten men for the remainder of the match (86’).

After missing a chance in the dying embers of the game in second half stoppage time through Brennan Johnson (90+7’), the full time whistle was blown by the referee to confirm an important 4 – 1 Premier League victory against West Ham with Spurs collecting the bragging rights against their local London rivals.

Match Stats:

It was Spurs who had the most possession with 57% of the ball compared with the Hammers’ 43% throughout the game. The hosts Tottenham also had more shots on target with 7 compared with 4 for West Ham.

Ange Postecoglou’s Post-Match Thoughts:

This is what Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Ange Postecoglou had to say following his side’s deserved and ruthless victory against West Ham United on Saturday afternoon here (via the official Spurs Website): “We know in most games that we’ll have those periods, it’s about capitalising. The fans played their part, you sensed when we scored the second goal that they created a good energy in the stadium and the players feed off that.

“We could tell if we went up a gear in that time… and the key thing is we did capitalise, we scored the goals, could have had a couple more. In those moments sometimes so far this year we haven’t capitalised, maybe got a goal, but kept the opposition in it. This time, we blew them away.”

As for his overall view, Ange was pleased all round. “I thought the boys were good today,” he added. “West Ham gave us a bit of an arm wrestle in the first half, they’re a tough team to play against, they have some physicality you have to deal with, it was a disappointing goal we let in but the response to that was good.

“We created some good chances, finally got the goal we deserved. In the second half, we were really dominant and showed all the facets of our game that we needed to, I thought we were exciting going forward, but we had to do some defensive work that I thought we did really well.”
