Son Captains South Korea to Gold

Son Heung-min is exempt from military service after he captained South Korea to the gold medal at the Asian games at the weekend.

His side beat Japan 2-1 in Indonesia after extra time with Lee Seung-woo of Italian side Hellas Verona and Hwang Hee-chan of Hamburg scoring for South Korea. Ueda Ayase (of Hosei University in Japan) scored late on for Japan but it turned out to be in vain as South Korea won gold at the Asian Games for the fifth time. Although he did not score, the Spurs attacker played a major part in the goals as he provided the assist for both.

Son was substituted in the final minute as the South Koreans looked to run down the clock and the final whistle was met with jubilant scenes from both him and his teammates. Many of his Spurs teammates were also quick to congratulate him on twitter.

Premier League and Champions League Await Son

South Koreans have to complete 21 months of military service before they’re 28 and the only way to be exempt from that is to win a medal at the Olympics or gold at the Asian games. Son missed South Korea’s last victory in the games 4 years ago due to club commitments with Bayer Leverkusen and was one of the overaged players in the under 23 squad.

After appearing against Newcastle off the bench in the first game of the season, Son will not be having a well-earned rest in the international break as he is in the South Korea squad for games against Costa Rica and Chile before being available for selection for Spurs next league game against Liverpool where he may add something to the team that they were missing on Sunday against Watford as, other than Fernando Llorente, Spurs had limited attacking options on the bench at Vicarage Road.
