Robert Sanchez to Spurs?

Latest Spurs Transfer News

Several news outlets, including The Daily Mail and Fichajes have linked Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with a move to Tottenham in the January transfer window.

The Spanish international’s market value is reported to stand at €32 million (£28.1 million) which, if the Spurs hierarchy decide that Sanchez is to become their new number one is a very reasonable fee indeed.

Robert Sanchez has been an ever present for The Seagulls this season (2022/23), playing all 18 of their Premier League matches to date. In this time, he has been able to keep 5 clean sheets and has been part of a very strong Brighton team that find themselves in the hunt for European Football this season.

He began his career in his native Spain, joining Cartagena in 2010. He then left to join Levante’s youth setup a few years later in July 2013 on a free transfer. Sanchez never made a senior appearance for either club before joining Brighton in 2016.

After gaining experience at the youth academy on the south coast, the Spaniard was loaned out to Forest Green Rovers for the duration of the 2018/19 season, with the club in League Two (Fourth Tier) at the time. He went on to make 17 appearances in all competitions that season, keeping 2 clean sheets.

The Green went on to finish in 5th place with 74 points, and they participated in the promotion play-offs. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the semi-finals 2-1 on aggregate by Tranmere Rovers.

After impressing, Sanchez was then loaned out to Rochdale, who were playing in League One (Third Tier), for the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign. He made 35 appearances in all competitions for The Dale, keeping 9 clean sheets in total.

The club went onto avoid relegation to League Two by finishing in 18th place with 36 points to their name. They were 4 points above the relegation zone.

After two impressive loan spells, Sanchez was handed his Brighton debut on 1st November 2020, where there may turn out to be irony in the fact that it was a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

He went on to be Brighton’s number one that season, keeping an incredible 10 clean sheets in 27 appearances in all competitions.

Brighton finished the 2020/21 Premier League season in 16th place with 41 points, comfortably clear of the bottom three.

Last season (2021/22), the Spanish International played 38 matches in all competitions, keeping 11 clean sheets on the way to Brighton finishing in 9th place on 51 points.

Sanchez has earned 2 senior caps for Spain to date and he was part of their 2022 Qatar World Cup Squad.

Whilst Lloris has not been in his best form recently, he is still Spurs’ number one. However, Sanchez has been excellent in the Premier League for Brighton and if he was to sign for Antonio Conte’s team, he would certainly enhance their chances of securing European Football for next season.
