Red Star Belgrade vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview

Spurs’ Champions League quest continues tonight as they travel to Serbia in hope of returning with three points and putting them in a brilliant position to qualify out of the group. Mauricio Pochettino will have a tough man-management task on his hands after Spurs suffered a difficult 1-1 draw away at Everton as the game was tarnished by the horrific leg break suffered by Andre Gomes late into the second half. The injury followed a tackle made by Son Heung-min for which the South Korean was wrongly sent off for. Son’s red card has been overturned but the attacker was distraught following the incident and may miss out against Red Star. According to reports close to the club, Son couldn’t even lift his head up in the dressing room after the match and had been crying for a sustained period.

Spurs look to get their Champions League campaign back on track against Red Star Belgrade having picked up an impressive 5-0 win in the reverse fixture back at Spurs New Stadium in matchday three and they’ll be looking to gain another good result to secure the second spot in the ground with managerless Bayern Munich continuing to dominate.

Red Star Belgrade continue to dominate the Serbian First Division and are flying high at the top of the table with a six-point lead. Since their crushing 5-0 victory at the hands of Spurs, they’ve continued a good run of form, winning their last three games pretty convincingly but they will be well aware of the calibre of opposition they will face in Tottenham Hotspur.

Harry Kane revealed yesterday that Spurs will follow UEFA’s three-step racial discrimination protocol should their team suffer any racial abuse from the stands. UEFA’s three-step protocol was introduced to try and combat racial abuse that is still rife throughout Europe. Red Star boss Vladan Milojevic has stated this week that Spurs will not suffer any racism. Red Star are a club that has fallen foul to racial incidents before in Europe.

Red Star Belgrade vs Tottenham Hotspur will be televised on BT Sport 2 at 20:00.

Team News

Jan Vertonghen may still miss the game in Belgrade whilst Hugo Lloris is side lined until 2020. It’s still unknown whether Poch will risk Son Heung-min for this match after being emotionally distraught after the Everton game. Spurs have offered the forward counselling after the incident. Harry Kane will play in the match.

Last Time They Met

Spurs ran out 5-0 winners just a few weeks ago but the sides have only met three times in their history with Spurs winning two and Red Star winning one. You have to go back to 1972 to find the last time these two played each other in the same season.

Poch’s Thoughts

: “We need to go with the mentality to try to win, to do our job but knowing that it’s going to be difficult. We saw what happened in the last few seasons with English teams like Liverpool playing there, it’s going to be a tough atmosphere and it’s going to be difficult. The Champions League always demands your best from you.”

“I think for everyone it’s a new stadium to play at, a different atmosphere and of course we hear that tomorrow we are going to live a very good experience. Red Star is a very good team. The circumstances that were in London (5-0 win for us a fortnight ago) are not going to be here tomorrow.”

How We See It

It’s going to be a difficult game for Spurs in a hostile environment but we’re hopeful Spurs can get the business done. 2-1 Spurs.
