Player Focus: Fraser Forster

Fraser Forster, standing at 6ft 7in is an experienced goalkeeper. The 37-year-old signed for Tottenham Hotspur in June 2022.

Beginnings at Newcastle United (2005)

Forster signed his first professional contract with Newcastle United in 2005. He never made a senior appearance for the Magpies, only featuring on the bench on several occasions in Premier League matches.

Loan spells at Stockport County and Bristol Rovers (2008 – 2009)

Forster’s first loan spell was at Stockport County in August 2008. He only made 7 appearances for the club in what was a one month loan deal, keeping 3 clean sheets. He then joined Bristol Rovers where he only made 4 appearances keeping 2 clean sheets.

Loan spell at Norwich City (2009 – 2010)

He signed for Paul Lambert’s Norwich City on loan, who were then in League One, in August 2009. He made a total of 38 appearances in the league for the Canaries, who he helped guide to the League One title, amassing a total of 95 points and kept a total of 19 clean sheets.

Spells at Celtic (2010 – 2011, 2011/12, 2012 – 2014 & 2019/20)

Forster made his maiden Celtic appearance in a 1-0 win against Motherwell in August 2010. In his first season at the club, Forster made 36 league appearances keeping 24 clean sheets.

The goalkeeper had a second loan spell in Glasgow the following season (2011/12). Forster was part of the squad that won the Scottish Premiership title, winning the league by 20 points. He made 33 appearances and kept 21 clean sheets.

The 2012/13 season saw Forster sign permanently for £2m. Celtic won the league title again. Fraser made 51 appearances in all competitions that season, keeping 22 clean sheets.

Forster and Celtic won the title once again in the following season.

His final spell at the club, (2019/20), this time on loan from Southampton saw him win his fourth league title with the Bhoys.

Spell at Southampton (2014 – 2022)

Fraser Forster signed for Southampton in August 2014 for a reported £10m. In his first season at the club (2014/15), he made 30 Premier League appearances, keeping 14 clean sheets. It was a good season for the club too, finishing 7th with 60 points.

2015/16 was even more successful than the first, with the club qualifying for the UEFA Europa League by finishing 6th with 63 points. Forster made 18 league appearances that season, keeping 6 clean sheets.

Southampton were knocked out in the Europa League group stage in 2016/17, and finished 8th in the Premier League on 46 points.

Overall, Forster made 162 appearances for Southampton, keeping 55 clean sheets.

Spell at Tottenham (2022 – Present)

Fraser Forster joined Tottenham on a free transfer in June 2022, following the expiration of his contract on the South Coast.

He has made one competitive appearance for Spurs to date, in the third round of the League Cup.
