Player Focus: Eric Dier

Career at Sporting CP (2012 – 2014)

He did not start his football career in England. Dier started at Portuguese giants Sporting CP having signed professional terms in 2010. His debut for the first team came in November 2012 in a 1-0 win against Braga in which he provided the assist that resulted in the winning goal.

Dier made 14 appearances over the rest of the 2012/13 season, scoring a goal and providing a total of 3 assists for his teammates. At the end of that season, Sporting finished in 7th place with 42 points – just missing out on European qualification.

In his final season at the club (2013/14), he once again made 14 appearances in Portugal’s top flight in which he got an assist and was part of the squad that finished in 2nd place on 67 points, securing qualification for European football.

Career Tottenham Hotspur (2014 – Present)

Eric left Sporting permanently in August 2014 when Tottenham signed him for a reported fee of £4m.

In his first season in the Premier League (2014/15), he made 28 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists for his teammates. He scored his first goal on his debut for the club in what was a 1-0 victory against West Ham at Upton Park.

He also scored on his home debut at White Hart Lane in a 4-0 Premier League win over Queens Park Rangers.

He managed 4 appearances in Europe that season, with some appearances in the League Cup and the FA Cup to boot.

Tottenham went on to finish 5th, securing qualification for European football.

Dier went on to make his senior England debut in November 2015, in a match against Spain.

The 2015/16 season was a particularly memorable campaign for Eric Dier and Tottenham. He appeared in all but one of the 38 Premier League matches, scoring three times and assisting twice in a season where Spurs got so close to winning the league title, only to be beaten to it by Leicester City. They finished 3rd that season on 70 points. They also had a successful European campaign, getting to the round of 16 where they were beaten by Borussia Dortmund.

In the 2018/19 season, Dier and Spurs made an appearance in the Champions League final, but lost 2-0 to Liverpool.

Dier made 35 Premier League appearances for Spurs last season (2021/22), finishing 4th with 71 points, qualifying for European football and finishing ahead of rivals Arsenal.

So far this season, Dier has made 14 Premier League appearances scoring 2 goals so far.
