Player Focus: Emerson Royal

Emerson Royal is a 6ft 0in right back. He currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur, joining from FC Barcelona on deadline day in August 2021.

Ponte Preta (2014 – 2018)

Emerson Royal began his career in his native Brazil with then top flight club Ponte Preta. He made his senior debut for the club in a 2-2 draw with Linense in February 2017. He then made his first start in a 1-0 victory against Sao Bernardo.

He made his full league debut in 2-0 league defeat against Bahia. The side were relegated at the end of the season, but Emerson was able to help guide his team to promotion the following season when he became a regular starter.

His first goal came against Mirassol in a cup final in April 2018.

Atletico Mineiro (2018 – 2019)

He then left Ponte Preta in April 2018 to join Atletico Mineiro, who are in the Brazilian top flight. His debut and first start for the club came on 19th May 2018 in a 1-0 league win against arch rivals Cruzeiro.

They finished in 9th in the 2018 season, with 54 points after 38 matches. The following season saw him score his first goal for the club came in an emphatic 5-2 league win over Sport Club do Recife in September 2018. He then left the club.

The club went on to finish 6th that season with 59 points after 38 matches.

Real Betis and FC Barcelona (2019 – 2021)

Emerson signed for FC Barcelona before immediately joining fellow Spanish La Liga side Real Betis on loan in January 2019, before becoming a permanent Betis player in July 2019 for €12.7m (£10.9m). The giants from Catalonia retained a buy back option which stood at a reported €6m (£5.1m).

In his first full season at Betis (2019/20), Emerson made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring 3 goals whilst also providing 6 assists. It was a 15th place finish that season, with 41 points to their name after 38 games.

He made his first senior appearance for Brazil coming off the bench in a 3-0 win against South Korea in November 2019.

In his final season at Los Verdiblancos (2020/21), he made 38 appearances in all competitions that season, scoring 2 goals with 4 assists being provided for his teammates. Betis had a much better season this time around, finishing in 6th place after 38 matches with 61 points.

In June 2021, FC Barcelona exercised their buy back option. He only made 3 appearances before leaving the club permanently.

Tottenham Hotspur (2021 – Present)

Emerson signed a permanent deal with Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur on 31st August 2021 for a reported £25.8m. He made his first full appearance for the club in a defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in September 2021.

In his first full season, he made 41 appearances in all competitions for Spurs, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Conte’s team secured a fourth place finish in 2021/22 with 71 points after 38 matches, securing European football.

At the time of writing, he has made 18 appearances in all competitions so far for Spurs in the 2022/23 season, scoring one goal.
