Nicolo Zaniolo to Spurs?

Nicolo Zaniolo has been linked by news outlets including Sky Sports with a loan move to Spurs this January. Zaniolo plays his football for Serie A giants AS Roma, who he joined in July 2018 from Inter Milan.

So far this season (2022/23), he has made 17 in all competitions, with 2 goals and 3 assists so far.

The attacking midfielder began his career in the Fiorentina Academy, before signing from fellow Italian team Virtus Entella in 2016. Zaniolo made his full professional debut in March 2017 in a 3-2 Serie B (Italian Second Tier) match against Benevento. He went on to make 7 appearances in the league for Entella that season (2016/17) finishing in 11^th place with 54 points.

A big transfer was to come very soon for the Italian, with Inter Milan signing Zaniolo on 5^th July 2017 for a fee reported to be as low as €1.8m (£1.5m). He played for Inter’s U19 team for the duration of the 2017/18 in the Primavera 1 (Italian U19 top flight) scoring a league high 13 goals with 8 assists to boot. Inter also won the Primavera 1 title that season.

Zaniolo never made a senior appearance I Nerazzurri, but he did feature in a pre-season friendly in July 2017. The attacking midfielder left the club at the end of the 2017/18 for AS Roma for a fee is reported to be in the region of €4.5m (£3.9m).

His full debut for Roma in a 3-0 UEFA Champions League defeat against Spanish giants Real Madrid on 19^th September. His first full appearance in Serie A for the club came just days later in a 4-0 victory against Frosinone.

The attacking midfielder scored his first league goal for I Giallorossi in a 3-1 win against Sassuolo. He made 36 appearances in all competitions that season, scoring 6 goals and providing 3 assists for his teammates. It was a 6^th placed finish for Zaniolo and Roma that season (2018/19), with 66 points to their name.

The following season (2019/20) was just as productive, with 8 goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances in all competitions. Roma finished 5^th with 70 points that season.

Zaniolo was very unfortunate to miss the entirety of the 2020/21 season with an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury, returning in July 2021. Without him, it was a 7^th place finish in Serie A with 62 points, just missing out on European Football. He was able to make his return in pre-season, ahead of the 2021/22 season.

In that season, he scored 8 goals and got 9 assists in his 42 appearances in all competitions with Roma finishing in 6^th and qualifying for European Football.

Overall, Nicolo Zaniolo has made 128 appearances for the Italian giants, scoring 24 goals with 18 assists to boot. This would be a solid for Spurs – the Italian is productive in front of goal and is creative. A loan would also be low risk.
