Match Report: Spurs vs Newport
Although Spurs were held at the gates away at Newport in the first game between the two, Lamela and Sissoko ensured that Spurs sailed past the visitors at Wembley. Tottenham made 10 changes in all to the side that drew 2-2 with Liverpool. The Lilywhites started slow, and Newport defended well from the back. Danny Rose had a chance to put Spurs ahead on the 22-minute mark and powerfully drilled Aurier’s cross low into the side netting. The goal came three minutes later when Sissoko looked to curl a cross into the path of Erik Lamela. With a stroke of fortune, Sissoko’s cross ricocheted off the leg of Newport’s Dan Butler and set Day the wrong way. The ball ended up in the back of his own net to give Spurs the lead.
As the half progressed Tottenham looked more comfortable and fully in control of the game. Son looked lively and fired a shot off the post in 30 minutes, Lamela volleyed a ball down the throat of Day a minute later. After a lovely passage of play, Son fired a shot on 32 minutes that just curled wide of the post. Finally, the second goal came not a minute later. Son dribbled the ball into the penalty area with three Newport players around him, and with a flick of the left boot found Erik Lamela with a pocket of space. Lamela still had some work to do in the six-yard box, but calmly took a touch and poked it around Day to score the second for Spurs. The remaining minutes of the half followed the same pattern as the first and saw the Spurs players peppering the goal of Day with shots.
Wanyama had a chance to make it three in the 56th minute. He rose unmarked from a corner but fired the ball straight into the hands of the Newport keeper. Llorente, who was quiet for Spurs, had a chance on the hour mark but couldn’t quite stretch far enough to reach an incoming cross. Day stopped a one-on-one from Erik Lamela, who had received a tidy ball over the top from Fernando Llorente. Then Llorente missed his biggest opportunity to score of the entire game. After being substituted on, Eriksen lofted a through ball onto the feet of Llorente, who, from six yards out, volleyed it across the goal and beat the post. Dele Alli hit the bar in a one-on-one with 8 minutes to go. Tottenham were all over Newport and although they gave a solid performance, on another night the score could have been five or six. Spurs finished the game with 73.9% possession and a total of 26 shots.
