Match Report: Spurs 1 – 0 Barnsley
Spurs edged Barnsley 1-0 to secure a spot in the 4th round of the Carabao Cup. However, it proved no easy task, and Tottenham did not have shot on target until the 62nd minute of the match. Llorente struggled in his debut start for Tottenham and missed arguably the best opportunity of the half after he failed to convert a set-piece. Ike Ugbo gave the championship visitors a glorious opportunity on the 46th-minute mark but failed to beat Vorm, who successfully parried his effort to safety.
Kieran Trippier created the opportunity for Spurs to go ahead. He touched the ball past his marker and ran to the corner of the six-yard box. After calmly looking up, Trippier cut the ball across the area to Alli who had found space amid four Barnsley defenders. It would have been more difficult to miss than score as Alli converted from three yards out. Spurs were underwhelming despite accruing 72.7% of the overall possession. One stat that particularly stands out, and represents the Spurs performance in the final third, was their overall shots on target. Out of a total 27 registered shots, Spurs hit 5 on target. Improvements must be made ahead of the next round against London rivals West Ham United.
